Wadsworth Wins caucus for speaker with 75 votes
Albany Jan 2 James W Wadsworth Jr of Livingston County son of Congressman James W Wadsworth and son in law of the late John Hay was nominated by the Republican assembly caucus for speaker and will be elected tomorrow. Edwin A Merritt Jr of St Lawrence received 14 votes and J M Wainwright 15. The open roll call showed the full Republican strength but no candidate secured a majority. Merritt moved to unanimous support with thanks to opponents.
