Germany Tariff War Risk and U S Policy Debate
The State Department may guide a new approach to Germany's tariff dispute. Consuls will seek additional data on merchandise destined for import to the United States to temper German exporters and perhaps ease the application of the new German tariff law. Treasury officials deny plans to change U S customs rules, while grain trade balances favor Britain. The outlook for German-U S relations hinges on placating moves before a potential tariff clash next March.
