Market Basket Lent Bites In On Veggie Shortage Warmer Weeks Ahead

Lent brings a mixed market with fish showing strength while poultry sales sag ahead of Easter. Lettuce and tomatoes stay scarce and pricier with tomatoes 15 to 30 cents a pound and lettuce 5 to 20 cents per head. Cucumbers hold 10 to 25 cents each, beans drop to 20 cents a quart, peppers to 60 cents a dozen, and mushrooms at 50 cents per pound. Apples stay 60 cents to $1 per peck. strawberries improve to 33 to 50 cents a quart. The market blames a vegetable shortage rather than capitalists, noting a short crop drives higher prices. Turkeys 20–22 cents, fowl 18–20, geese 18, ducks 20. Poultry dullness persists until after Easter with fowl scarce and of lower quality.
