Geologist Predicts Producer Gas to Power Nation

United States Geological Survey Director Charles I. Walcott predicts producer gas from lignites and bituminous coal will become the chief power source. Experiments in St. Louis show gas engines outperform steam plants, with 30 to 80 percent efficiency gains. Slack coal may also be converted to producer gas, expanding use in the Plains region. A near-term power grid could deliver electricity over hundreds of miles from a central plant near coal mines.
