Million for Schools Gift of an Aged Quakeress
Philadelphia April 23 A gift of one million dollars funds a perpetual endowment to aid rural and community schools for Southern negroes. Trustees Booker T Washington and Hollis Burke Frissell will administer, with Mr. Frissell and Mr. Washington naming successors. The grant directs income solely to rural and community schools, not to Hampton or Tuskegee institutes, and a fiscal agent will manage finances. The donor Miss Anna T Jeanes, an elderly Philadelphia Quakeress, has long backed black education and seeks cooperation with state and county officials to boost local schools.
