Fell From Engine Injures B&O Engineer Merritt
Engineer Eugene L. Merritt a veteran B&O S W trainman fell from his freight engine at O Fallon Ill while walking on the running board. Freight Wreck Delays Trains At Oakland City
A northbound E I freight collided with a standing Southern train across the crossing at Oakland City this morning. Two cars laden with sawlogs were wrecked and damaged the depot platform. Debris cleared by 1 pm, allowing trains to pass. the noon passenger arrived over three hours late at 2:45 pm.

Second Smallpox Death in a Day
Mrs. Frank McLaughin of West Walnut street died Monday afternoon at five from smallpox, the second fatality in a day. Her loss deeply affects her husband, a B.& O. 5 W. car inspector, who moved here recently after their baby also died. Burial was at Oak Grove cemetery at midnight. No new smallpox cases were reported today as James Boring’s East Fourteenth street residence was quarantined due to Mrs. Pierce Sanford’s children.

Burglar rogues startled by resident at West First Street
At about one o'clock Monday burglars tried to enter Mrs. William MacDougal’s West First Street residence but fled after Mrs. Lee Hamersly spotted a tall man in black across the street joining a second man at the door. The couple alerted Lee Hamersly, who left for his gun. by the time he returned the intruders were gone. Police were called but did not arrive in time. Also reported: large sale of farm implements and stock by William H. Wilson in Sugarland and his forthcoming move to a new farm south of Washington this fall.

Della Hembree Dies at 23 from Consumption
Miss Della Hembree aged twenty three died at 10 o'clock this morning at the home of her parents Mr and Mrs Richard Hembree on South Meridian Street from consumption. She had suffered several weeks and death was expected. Surviving are two brothers Frank and James, a sister Mrs Henry Krupp, and another brother Lewis. Funeral services will be held at the residence Wednesday afternoon, with burial at Oak Grove cemetery.
