A Union county grand jury charged James Huntington of Creston, former deputy county treasurer, with grand larceny for the Sept 9 robbery of the county treasury totaling 2815 dollars and forgery for alleged alteration of fee receipt records in the motor vehicle department.
Senator Gay M. Gillette asks the Commerce Department to explain why the two census managers for Iowa next year were named without consultation with him or Senator Clyde L. Herring. Sources identify the appointees as Milo Sedlarcek of Cedar Rapids and Thomas Wood of Hastings, tied to the Bierer-Wearin-Jacobsen faction.
Creston Ruhyl Siddens, 22, a farm youth, was jailed in Union County on a charge of attempting to extort 3000 dollars from neighbor Wallace Wells. Sheriff J. R. Ewing said Siddens directed Wells to surrender the money and left the letters signed X23 threatening harm if payment was not made. Wells was instructed to place the funds in a fruit jar at the pasture’s north end.
Iowa Supreme Court refused to rehear three Maytag Co. labor dispute leaders at Newton. The court sustained $500 fines for contempt of court and left six month jail terms suspended. If fines are unpaid the trio face five months in jail each.
Two hundred persons gather at the railroad station to greet the Rev. Patrick N. McDermott, newly elected national chaplain of the American Legion, upon return from the Chicago convention. Legionnaires and guardsmen accompany him in a Main Street parade as Mayor Joseph Burnea delivers the main address.
Arthur Geifman a 22 year old Ottumwa shoe merchant was found fatally wounded in his storefront Friday. A .32 caliber bullet entered above the right ear and the cash register was emptied except for checks, suggesting a theft motive. Ed ward Hawks, a part time employee, discovered him and alerted police. He died at Ottumwa hospital at 1 45 p m. Detectives Clemens and Kapp responded to the scene.
Benjamin Bentzinger state highway patrolman reports ten driver tests yesterday two for chauffeurs and two instruction permits. Iowa poll results show five congressmen did not answer the Iowa Daily Press Association survey on keeping America out of a European war. Among those replying were Senators Herring and Gillette and Representatives Martin, LeCompte, and Jensen, with others abstaining or declining for various reasons.
Judge J G Patterson adjourned for the week in the September term of district court in Washington and will resume Monday with jury trials. Howard Dawson faces trial for obtaining money by false pretenses, with jury selection set for 2 PM Monday. Divorce granted to Luete Clark against James K B Clark. Benjamin H Sadler case dismissed.
At Castel Gandolfo Pope Pius XII wept as he addressed sobbing Polish refugees, urging peace and religious freedom for Catholics in occupied Poland. In Bucharest, President Moscicki resigned as Poland’s president, with August Waleski expected to become foreign minister and inform King Carol of Romania.
About 240 students and 10 adults from Mount Pleasant Washington Winfield New London and Fairfield attended the third annual home project conference at Washington high school. The day included a mixer box lunches at Sunset Park fourteen discussion groups led by Washington student leaders and talks by Rev. William M Nichol and school board president Glenn Mace. The event closed with a tea and dance in the gym.
North Fourth Avenue rail crossing work requires street closure to vehicles and pedestrians for several days. Street Commissioner Blaine Holmes says traffic is halted at the tracks and urges Stewart School students to use the North Second Avenue underpass during repairs.
Berlin reports say Adolf Hitler summoned Italy for an emergency consultation in Berlin with a Reich government declaration planned next week. Italian foreign minister Count Ciano is expected to arrive Sunday, signaling high-level collaboration in critical European events.
