The Stewart School kindergarten features a marble hall leading to a wood floored room with a large glass cabinet, teacher’s desk, a miniature room, toys and tools on shelves, long windows with venetian blinds, heat registers, a full corner closet, lined bulletin boards, open desks, a reading table, easels with paints, music equipment including a piano and vietrola, a kids’ bath and fountain, and extensive lighting and safety features making it an attractive learning space.
The Junior High elected class officers for multiple home rooms. 7th graders in rooms 103 101 and 202 chose presidents secretaries health and program committees with advisors listed. 8th grade room 10 selected president vice president secretary and committees. Most rooms report projects planned ahead and magazines shared.
Third grade Lincoln students visited Stewart School in Washington Iowa after receiving a written invitation. They arrived 1:30 to 2:00 pm walked through the new building, toured Miss Kam mueller’s third grade room, the art room and library, and enjoyed the gym and fountains.
A school report notes the Senior class held a gymnasium party Tuesday from 5 15 to 8 30 with hot dogs chocolate milk and taffy apples served at 6 00. The event featured dancing led by Bill Brown and Edward Nardy while Miss Anderson’s home room hosted a Wiener roast at Pansy Hill.
A pair of sophomores described in a student profile are well liked and active. One is male, short with brown hair and eyes, taking Kau Neh II Ceasar algebra and biology while joining Theta Mu glee club and football. He favors Spencer Tracy and Myrna Loy. The other is female with light complexion blue eyes and brown curly hair, taking English world history home making and biology, roller skating, and participating in glee club Theta Mu and GA A, liking Richard Greene and Priscilla Lane.
The Lincoln second graders recount a trip to Hubert Simons capturing sights such as corn shocks a windmill a soap box derby car and pigs at Hubert's farm. They describe nine small pigs two large pigs four kittens and a pleasant day with drawings and a letter to Mrs Simons.
Mr. Boyd White announced a new girls glee club with 60 members chosen from 115 tryouts. The list includes Frances Turnipseed, Mary Dreckmeir, Wilma Simons, Gloria Nayadley, Jane Baldridge, and many others across sopranos and altos. A separate 8 boy pool will select the high school quartet with roles for tenor, baritone, and bass.
A library group enjoyed a selection of tales and poems including The Plump Pig The Three Little Pigs The Little Pig The Old Woman and Her Pig The Pancake The Little Bull Calf More About the Four Little Kittens Whilly McManon Supposin We Were Pigs and Mary Middling s Pig.
Locker Room notes say the Demons face the Fairfield Trojans next Friday October sixth in Fairfield with about twenty five players traveling. Fairfield’s squad is similar in size. Last week’s strenuous workouts likely continue and Dick Marshall’s broken wrist may stretch a few weeks before return. Possible changes may be made.
Washington High School introduces a two hour non credit course in English and history combined. Miss Leila Anderson leads the class in the old library to bridge theory and practice. Reports integrate history content with grammatical study to reinforce sentence construction.
A survey of the nine new juniors reveals Edwin Wells of Beacon Iowa in English TV American history chemistry journalism and orchestra. Mary Wells from West Chester High enters Washington Hi with Ameri can history English II typing chemistry and band. Other arrivals include Viole Marek Riverside Eleanor Keagy Aberdeen SD Wayne Durst Brighton Jessie Dunbar Riverside Roger Sheetz Marie Sojka Maurice Koehler and more with varied schedules and hobbies noted.
Bills Brown moves to end replacing Lloyd Scott who quit to work. Don Burger could return to center with Brown out. Terry Anderson moves to three back. Uncertainty over permanence prompts groans in the dressing room amid strenuous workouts.
A survey of about 441 students at Washington High School reveals common given names among girls and boys. Bill and Bob lead male names, with many students named Donald Don and Lot of Johns, Richards, Dorothys, Marjories, Margarets, Millers, and multiple twins among the Walkers, Steeles, Crossetts, Hamils, and Grubbs.
Howard Huntington a National program Service magician entertained Washington High School Monday morning. He mixed dry wit with tricks as silk ties formed a bouquet and a glass of water stayed inverted without spilling. Carl Kievi and Fred Reid joined him on stage for a record trick while the crowd roared.
The southeast district marching band contest will be held here Friday night October 26. Washington was chosen for the site because of our fine field good lighting and sufficient seating. The state is divided into four parts southeast southwest northwest and northeast. There will be a meeting for all district commanders at Ames Saturday September 30 with southeastern commander Mr. Ralston to attend. More information will appear later.
Iowa City artist Mrs. Dora Mason will address students next Tuesday at 10 06 AM. She plans a live model drawing from the student body during the lecture.
