County Treasurer Wallace Fagen said November 1 is the deadline for first half taxes to avoid penalty in Washington County. He cites an attorney general opinion granting 90 days from tax books certification to pay without penalty.
The Agriculture Department raised interest on price support loans and storage gear loans to 7.50 percent annual, effective October 1 1975. The new rate applies to loans with applications after October 1 1974 and disbursements after October 1 1975, reflecting higher borrowing costs. In Iowa Knoxville workers in CWA Local 7177 walked out in a wildcat strike over promotion procedures affecting Iowa State Telephone and Hawkeye State Telephone companies.
The Labor Department filed in Davenport Iowa a complaint against Tailor and Co Inc of Bettendorf alleging minors under 16 worked excess hours and at least three youths under 18 engaged in hazardous tasks including forklift operation power metal sheets and power band hacksaws.
Dean Garrett was installed as president of the Washington Kiwanis Club by Lt. Gov. Earl Phillips. He assumes leadership Oct. 1, succeeding Robert Reed. Officers for 1975 76 include Clarence Brown, Mike Leary, Percy Holder, and T M Nelson, with new directors Al Swarthout, Dave Bell, Bill Westphal and Marty Chebuhar.
Firefighters gained control of most fires but rival blazes spread across Riverside and San Diego regions. The largest blaze west of Beaumont scorched 20 250 acres, destroying 12 homes and a $500 000 Atterberry ranch along with a rare collection of sports cars. Avocado groves, barns and irrigation systems burned as authorities warned total losses would reach millions.
Washington High School eyes 30 credits over 3 grades with nine sophomore units and 10.5 in each of junior and senior years. Two math and science courses would be required under the Curriculum Council plan to start with the class of 1979. Principal Burge Hammond opposes mandatory math and science courses. The board tabled the proposal for further study.
Patricia Hearst is identified as a prime suspect in an armed bank robbery near Sacramento where $15,000 was stolen and a bystander was killed. Investigators tied a getaway car to suspect Steve Soliah and found marked money at the house where Hearst was later arrested.
United Press International reports temperatures above 100 degrees across California with Los Angeles reaching 102 and Long Beach unconfirmed at 105. About 250,000 people crowded LA area beaches despite a workday, lifeguards conducting over 200 rescues as surf sizzled and brush fires burned 35,000 acres before a sixth fire raged, costing an estimated 10 million dollars. Rains threaten floods in the Northeast from remnants of Eloise.
The Evening Journal notes races are set for three Washington City Council posts in the November 4 election with seven candidates filing. Bill Brown and Gerald King fill the first ward vacancy, with other filings by Raymond Moyer, Ken McCormick, William Potter, Frank Pierce, and Clarence Berkhoff for at large and third ward seats. Incumbents John Walker Clarence Brown and Harry Levy will not seek re election. Park Board member Don Minick also holds position.
Ten Washington County 4-H members will be elected to the County Council at the annual convention Saturday, September 27 at 7 30 p m at Washington High School. Candidates include Robbie Brenneman Randy Finke Kevin Horn Bruce Kaufman Joe Mineart Mike O Connor David Sojka Marty Sojka Bob Stutzman Warren Temple Kris Armstrong Donna Davisson Debby Johnson Betty Jones Brenda McConnell Carol Radda Vickie Sieren Nancy Walker.
James Peterson of Washington was named vice president of the Iowa Horological Association at its Marshalltown convention held with the Iowa Retail Jewelers. More than 250 jewelers attended, showcasing 42 exhibitors.
Halcyon nurse care center plans a fundraising drive October 13 to 20 to raise 250000 for a new north south wing at Halcyon House in Washington. The project adds twenty nursing beds private and isolation rooms and expansion space to meet state and federal standards.
