Randy Beaver a 19 year old Hy Vee employee from Allerton was arrested in Corydon on larceny in the nighttime charges after authorities say he claimed he was abducted during a Monday night robbery. More than $10,000 in cash and checks were taken. Beaver is out on bond after being arraigned.
Reuben Webber found a bull moose weighing 800 to 900 pounds trapped in his spring. Warden and crew used a backhoe and a strap around the antlers to coax the animal free. After a quick exit, the moose ran around the house then vanished into the woods.
Rain drenched teachers marched for a third day in a Boston strike costing the union 5000 dollars daily. A state court on Tuesday ordered the strike halted as illegal under Massachusetts law. Desegregation efforts were disrupted as negotiations stalled with no progress reported. Negotiations were to resume.
Iowa Transportation Director Victor Preisser says layoffs may drop up to 40 DOT workers by year end 1975 as the agency seeks to avoid becoming a welfare service. Chairman Robert Rigler agrees unneeded employees may be let go after a district judge blocked forced retirements of four workers over 65 who sought extensions.
Missouri Pacific says it has no interest in absorbing the bankrupt Rock Island Railroad as part of a merger with Texas and Pacific and Chicago & Eastern Illinois. Trustee William Gibbons had suggested a combined line to save Rock Island, but MoPac denies an expanded or separate merger and asks ICC to consider only its existing plan.
Widespread flash flood watches persist from the lower Ohio Valley to the middle Atlantic as the Eloise remnants push northeast into Pennsylvania. Rains of up to 10 inches soak Florida while California fights brush fires across four counties aided by Marines near Camp Pendleton. Temperatures reach 102 in downtown Los Angeles amid a hot, dry spell. New York records 2.07 inches of rain in Central Park with 8.28 inches noted in 1882.
A Garuda Airways F28 passenger flight overshot the Palembang airport runway in dense fog and crashed. At least 23 of the 61 aboard were killed and 36 were injured in the Southeast Sumatra accident.
Patty Hearst says she was terrorized during captivity and slipped toward insanity, claiming brainwashing that made her criminal acts beyond her control. The defense seeks bail for psychiatric evaluation while prosecutors keep her jailed. Judge Carter orders immediate exams and keeps her in custody.
Senate committee chair Frank Church said the CIA opened and read mail for nearly 20 years, including Richard Nixon, Martin Luther King Jr, Linus Pauling, John Steinbeck, and Victor Reuther. The practice began in 1954 and continued to 1973, affecting Congress members and private citizens alike.
President Ford, after two assassination attempts, pledged to remain as visible as possible while traveling. Senate Republican Leader Hugh Scott said there is no plan to curtail travel, noting Ford will be cautious but inclined to stay engaged with the public. Hurricane Eloise weakened and moved into Tennessee after ripping through the Florida Panhandle. Panhandle cities including Panama City Beach Fort Walton Beach and Destin suffered extensive damage with felled power, destroyed planes and boats, unroofed buildings and a collapsing sea wall. Bay County damage alone was estimated at 50 million dollars as residents faced losses and power outages.
In Sacramento UPI reports Chief Judge Thomas J MacBride ruled Lynette Fromme may defend herself against the attempted murder charge of President Ford with tight limits. A cocounsel federal defender was appointed and she was warned against political statements.

AFL-CIO President George Meany testified before the Senate Budget Committee that Congress should permit a fiscal 1976 deficit of at least 80 to 100 billion dollars or more to finance large federal spending aimed at putting unemployed Americans back to work, arguing unemployment is the key issue.
