District Court Judge Harold Vietor approved the Meardon Sueppel firm fees of 150 000 and expenses 16 472 74 for representing James R. Speed in his 3.5 million damage suit against Iowa. Speed, who went blind after meningitis and a sinus clot, previously won a 750 000 judgment against the state. The fees are to be paid from the judgment. Speed was recruited to play basketball for the University of Iowa but never played varsity due to his disability.

Nowlin Murder Trial Opens In Cerro Gordo County

Happy ending in kidnapping case of 4 year old Allison Mechem
Four year old Allison Mechem was found safe in a Cincinnati motel room after being abducted while on a tricycle near her Mt Lookout home. Frank Joseph Wiechman 26, a parolee for armed robberies, surrendered and was charged. an unidentified man and a woman were being questioned. Motel maids heard crying, entered with a pass key, and recovered the girl. The father Charles Mechem Jr. rushed to reunite with his daughter as police credited motel staff for aiding the release.
