Chief Justice Warren E. Burger is in good spirits at Bethesda Naval Hospital after a weekend bicycle crash left him with a broken finger and other injuries. Doctors expect a two month cast on his right hand and probable discharge soon, with police noting he may have been bumped by a car after initially being said to have fallen from his new birthday bike.

Judges at the Dairy Cattle Congress named champions in three dairy breeds on Monday. Frank Sivesind of Waukon showed the champion Guernsey cow, and Russel Wirt of Lewiston, Minn., the champion Guernsey bull. Wirt also showed the reserve champion cow, while Clarence Ahlborn of Owatonna, Minn., held the reserve champion bull. Ralph Bright of near Glencoe, Minn., showed both grand and reserve champion bulls in Brown Swiss and the reserve champion cow. Steve Tuman of Glencoe displayed the champion Brown Swiss cow. The Musical Herd of New Providence produced the Milking Shorthorn champion bull, with William Jones of Washington presenting the reserve bull. Aaron Kuske of Osceola, Wis., had the champion and another unspecified title in the division.

Early Midwest frost to push up food prices and farm income loss
An early crop killing frost in the Midwest may raise next year’s food prices and immediately cut farm income.
