East German police cleared 200 residents from Bernauer Strasse as part of a border eviction along the Berlin border with West Berlin. Women escaped by rope to West Berlin while U S Army patrols on the Berlin corridor signaled continued Western resolve in the divided city.
Wayne Carter of Letts owned the grand champion carcass after the Saturday morning hog contest at the Bath Packing plant in Columbus Junction part of the Louisa County Market Hog Show. Bill Crayne of Washington took reserve honors. the champion weighed 157 pounds carcass from a 211 pound crossbred Hampshire and sold for 27.53 per hundredweight to the Louisa County Swine Producers Association. Crayne’s Poland China hog placed second. The association plans a banquet Monday night at the Columbus Junction high school at 6:30 with seven trophies awarded.
U.N. intelligence chief in Katanga Lt. Col. Bjorn Egge says sabotage is almost certainly ruled out as the cause of Dag Hammarskjold’s crash. Harold Julien, the sole U.N. guard survivor, dies in Ndo la hospital, raising fears of no eye witness account. The post mortem is complete and the body heads to Stockholm for burial. a state funeral will follow in Upp sala.
The Army says 120,000 reservists called to active duty for the Berlin crisis will be combat ready in four months, half the Korea War training time. A new program emphasizes physical fitness, faster methods, and improved civilian preparation. Helicopters replace some vehicle tasks to speed the schedule.
Funeral services for Frank Paisley 93 of Winfield are set for Tuesday at 2 PM in the First Presbyterian Church Winfield with Rev Chester Chandler officiating. He died Sunday September 24 at a Burlington hospital. Survived by Mrs Robert Holmes of Washington and eight children including C R and Lauren of West Liberty and Mrs George Hazlette of Muscatine. Burial arrangements with Barton McKasson Funeral Home Winfield.
The Iowa Association for Mental Health is included in the 1962 Washington Community Chest budget to fund improvements in mental illness treatment and prevention. President John Winga Jr. notes the small allotment aims to support continued effective work with wider community backing. headquarters are at 36 Flynn Building Des Moines.
The newly redecorated Diamond Inn will have its grand opening Wednesday evening September 27. Mr and Mrs Ed Knepp announced. The Diamond Inn lies on the west edge of Washington on highway 92 and was leased after a period of operation by previous tenants. The property was remodeled following the lease.
About 150 to 200 local farmers are set to attend a livestock and feed outlook meeting at the Washington Sale Barn Tuesday evening. The event is sponsored by the County Extension Service and county beef and swine producers associations. Speakers include Bill Zmoleck from Iowa State University and Charles Mogget from Fairfield. A feeder calf grading demonstration will feature cattle from Paul Widmer and Don Rinner.
A junior high dance instruction series begins at the YMCA on October 5. The 10 lessons cover social folk and square dancing, meeting Thursdays at 6 pm through December 14 with no class on Thanksgiving. Fee is 4 dollars for members and 6 dollars for non members, who receive a club membership for all junior high dances next year. Limited to 24 students.
The Air Rifle Club begins its second year at the local YMCA with a 4 PM meeting Tuesday announced by Tom McSpadden. Last year’s members are invited to the 5 PM advanced class. organized practice continues each Tuesday.

Cuban interior ministry said 12 men were rounded up across three provinces under operation Sport City for plans to ambush and kill Premier Fidel Castro. The group allegedly included a former Batista official and an American-linked coordinator in Las Villas, with weapons and coded messages seized.
The Washington County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Committee was re-elected for another term at the annual ASC convention held at the ASC office. Howard Lins of Brighton chairs the new committee with Sam J D Boyd of Ainsworth as vice chairman and David Kleese of Washington as regular member. John Patterson of Washington is first alternate and Edgar Stewart of West Chester is second alternate. The meeting noted the long service and familiarity of the current committee.
Washington County recorder’s office offers booklets summarizing hunting and trapping laws. Published by the State Conservation Commission, the volumes arrived late and some early license buyers missed copies. Available to anyone requesting a copy from the recorder.
Census Director Richard Scammon forecast in a TV interview that the US population would rise from about 185 million to 200 million in five years and reach roughly 400 million within the lifetime of a five year old daughter. He framed the projection as a long term trend.

He rejects a Soviet troika at the UN, pledges a peace race, and calls for a step by step path to general disarmament while stressing Berlin’s defense and outer space safeguards.
