Sweden Plans Torchlight Parade for Dag Hammarskjold

Sweden will hold a torchlight parade and a nationwide minute of silence on the eve of Dag Hammarskjold’s royal funeral in Uppsala. The UN Association says the rally in Stockholm will honor the late UN Secretary General who died in a Congo plane crash. Eleanor Roosevelt is invited to speak, with Vice President Lyndon B Johnson and Mrs Dwight D Eisenhower among attendees at the funeral.

Funeral for Hammarskjold planned across Europe

The Swedish University Students Association urged a national minute of silence as Hammarskjold’s funeral proceeds. Scholarships in his name will fund study for students from underdeveloped nations in Sweden. His body, arriving by chartered plane from Ndola, was delayed by the crash investigation and may not reach before Monday.

Keokuk Infant Revived by Firemen on EMS Trip

In Keokuk a seven month old boy was revived by Fire Chief John Breheny and firefighter Joe Gredell after he appeared to suffocate in blankets. The infant was found entangled and not breathing by his mother Mrs Tom Mortimer and rushed to a hospital where seven minutes elapsed from alarm to arrival.

Four from Canton South Dakota Die In Iowa Crash

Three members of a Canton South Dakota family were killed and a fourth critically injured when their car struck the rear of a disabled semi trailer on Iowa 12 about 12 miles north of Sioux City. The four were returning from a Canton High School game against Sioux City Riverside.

Iowa Schools Struggle With New State Curriculum Rules

Iowa high schools face difficulty meeting new state requirements for subjects this year. About 40 schools already received waivers to delay inclusion of certain courses, and nearly 30 more requests were filed. Senate edges toward adjournment over Mexican labor program

The Senate extended the Mexican farm labor program but doubts linger on a weekend adjournment. Iowa roads largely below good condition on state report

Iowa’s primary road system is aging with 62 percent rated less than good by the Iowa Highway Commission in a report to Gov. Erbe. Only 2,437 miles are excellent and 429 miles are good while 2,199 miles are poor to fair and 3,118 miles critical, prompting calls for more funding.
