A Des Moines column notes younger Iowa farm men with agricultural deferments could be inducted into the army this winter. Brig. Gen. Charles H. Grahl, Iowa director of selective service, said they will be drafted to replace older men already in service who are being discharged to return to the farm.
The Ord nance Steel Foundry Co plant in Bettendorf with about 1800 workers closed Friday after a wage dispute. Molding department workers walked out Thursday in protest over a 15 cent per hour pay cut for women, prompting the company to shut the entire plant Friday morning.
The Iowa state board of education announced the sale of 20 farms from its endowment fund. Values range from 4000 for a 41 acre Johnson county farm to 51200 for a 320 acre Lyon county property, totaling 452500. Ten farms belong to the State University of Iowa fund and ten to Iowa State College.
