Federal agents crackdown on decomposed mildewed and wormy food under the pure food law. Large seizures target District of Columbia pies and bulk ingredients like wormy raisins evaporated apples and wormy flour. Secretary Wilson announces strict action nationwide to curb unfit foods.
Delegates at Arlington Iowa on September 23 generally favor joining the evangelical synod in a move toward federation with Christian denominations of America to unite in gospel work. A special committee studied the matter and reported largely through Rev. J A Schneider Evansville.
New Orleans and surrounding areas recover from the tropical hurricane. Five lives are confirmed lost and about fifty more feared dead in lower Terrebonne parish. Property damage runs into millions, crops ruined, miles of territory devastated, andrailroad lines and communications crippled.
A six person family and three others were murdered and most bodies burned at a house in Hurley Buchanan county. Aunt Betty Justis the owner believed to keep money faced the attack. Mrs Meadys body found in a field with mutilations.
In Birmingham Mary Leigh and Charlotte Marsh, two ringleaders, were sentenced to three and three months at hard labor respectively after rioting at a September 11 meeting where Premier Asquith spoke. During sentencing many suffragettes in court grabbed objects as missiles and smashed court room windows.
Frank Glae a well known Calc ombounty resident and foreman of the recently finished grand jury dropped dead while listening to a trial in Judge Church's court. He had long suffered from heart disease.
The Associated Fraternities of America elected E. J. Donovan of Detroit as president and W. E. Davey of Des Moines as vice president for the coming year. CC. H. Robinson of Chicago was re elected secretary treasurer. Three new groups Modern Woodmen of America Royal Neighbors and Ladies of the Maccabees joined, bringing total membership to over one million.
Council Bluffs IA Sept 23 The grand jury readies a monster indictment in the Mabray swindle cases charging use of the mails to defraud over 100 persons nationwide. Witnesses include three women and J E Cavanaugh of Oklahoma. First National Bank of Council Bluffs wins a damages suit against G F Castle.
Victoria B C Sept 23 The American missionary yacht Hiram Bingham capsized at Jaluit Rev Dr Walkup died from exposure and the eight others spent three weeks in an open boat without food
In Andrew Iowa a large crowd gathered for the unveiling of Ansel Briggs memorial at the cemetery with Governor Carroll ex governor Larrabee and numerous senators and representatives speaking. W Gregory delivered a memorial address praising Briggs and his era while Mrs Briggs Robertson unveiled the flag hiding the monument.
Nellie Taylor of Ottumwa was arrested in Ottumwa by Detectives Brunnemer Hielin and Glynn for the murder of her infant son discovered in a Union Park vault. She confessed to Des Moines officers and was brought back for arraignment on first degree murder. Her husband Glenn Taylor was previously killed on the railroad. The infant was born Aug 5.
In El Paso on September 23 a bomb was located at the rear of the Juarez customs house near the platform prepared for the Taft Diaz meeting on October 16. Police say more than thirty arrests followed as the investigation continued.
The city of Oskaloosa Iowa faces about forty thousand dollars in damage suits over alleged sewage discharges into ravines and waterways at the city outskirts. The pollution is said to render streams unfit for stock water across miles of farm land. Suits are to be called at the next district court term. The council has begun plans for several sewage disposal plants to address the issue.
The body of Governor Johnson was shipped to St. Peter for interment after lying in state in the capitol in St. Paul. Over 60,000 people viewed the remains while schools closed in his honor and statewide business paused briefly. Memorial services occurred in St. Paul schools and church bells tolled across the state at set times.
Funeral rites were held in Fort Dodge Iowa for Mer Lenihan after which the body was casketed for transport to Dubuque. A Pontifical high mass was celebrated by Bishop Garrigan. Father J P O Connor of Sioux City delivered the sermon.
Figures from the pension office show Iowa pensions for the year ending June 30 remained nearly unchanged from the prior year. At June 30 there were 33,568 pensioners, paid 5,573,679 dollars, versus 33,362 beneficiaries paid 5,748,809 dollars in the previous year.
Boulogne September 23. Captain Ferber an army officer was killed near here while testing an aeroplane. The machine in flight turned over and plunged to the ground crushing him beneath the motor.
Robert Hoe, head of R Hoe and Co print press manufacturers of New York and London, died in London after a brief illness. He was seventy years old.

Com Robert E Peary offered no new statements on the controversy and set sail from Truro heading toward Eagle Bay. He traveled to Sydney then departed for Portland while reviewing his correspondence.
Walter Page director of the United States office of public roads told the good roads convention in Cleveland that the U S is not more developed than thirty years ago. He noted about half the states still follow colonial era road laws. St Louis was picked as next convention host with date to be set by the St Louis Automobile Club for October 1910.
In Guadalaja Sept 23 an American mining contractor John M Grice and five Mexican miners were instantly killed by a dynamite explosion at the Petgrino mine in the Guanajuato district. The event details are reported from the Guanajuato region.
Des Moines dispatch reports Johnelt zer was awakened at Mere hospital and brought to police court where he was arraigned on a murder charge in the killing of Detective Frank Belmege. His hearing was set for October.
