President Taft touched on taxation at five percent and a needed revision. He said the treasury will meet essential needs partly by a 40.99 to 50 million dollar cut in congress appropriations and partly by income from the corporate tax law. He noted initial support for an inheritance tax but objections overstepping existing rates blocked the proposal.
Bloodhounds placed on a tramp said to have assaulted sixteen year old Max Wilson near Britt Iowa. The girl fled to a neighbor after being threatened and the search dogs were brought from Boone but no trace found. The incident followed by report on New York City celebration planning and grand street decorations.
The body of Farnsworth an elderly Camanche man missing since early August was found on Swan Island in the Mississippi River near Albany. Decomposition suggests death occurred soon after disappearance. He may have waded to the island in shallow water and drowned. discovery by Clinton women while fishing was accidental.

Ida Grove September 22. C. W. Clark a pioneer Iowa resident and father of Mrs. J. L. Bleakly wife of the state auditor died at his home here. He was seventy four years old.
A two mile line of American warships led by the flagship Connecticut steamed through the Narrows and joined foreign vessels in New York Harbor. Estimated receipts show 16000 in market with steady to higher tones. Beeves bring 4.00 to 8.35, cows and heifers 2.10 to 6.00, Texas steers 3.90 to 15, stockers and feeders 3.10 to 5.25, Western cattle 3.90 to 6.60.

Hog prices rise strong to six cents higher with ranges for bulk at 8 05 to 8 30 per hundred weight. Light pigs quoted 7 75 to 8 30, mixed packers 7 70 to 8 45, heavy ships grades 7 55 to 8 45, rough at 7 55 to 7 80. Cattle firm for a good market while other classes move slowly. sheep hold steady.

New governor Adolph C. Eberhart, born in Sweden 38 years ago, becomes chief executive after Governor Johnson’s death. A Gustavus Adolphus College graduate, he shifted from ministry to law and has long been active in Republican politics. He served in the state senate in 1903 and 1905 and was lieutenant governor in 1906 and 1908. His surname changed from Olson after marriage to avoid identity confusion in Mankato.
