Former Deputy Indicted For Hiring Arsonist
Woodbury County grand jury charges Lewis Hogue a 59 year old former deputy sheriff with hiring a convict to burn a house on his Salix area farm to collect fire insurance. Emory N. Hogue 40 of Sioux City was sentenced to three years in state prison for conspiracy to commit arson. The May 10 fire occurred two miles south of Salix.

Brighton Collision Causes $275 Damage
A collision at a Brighton intersection early today caused about $275 damage to two vehicles. No injuries occurred. Robert D. Hesseltine, driving a 1950 Plymouth, hit Leroy F. Mineart’s 1951 Chevrolet truck. Hesseltine’s car sustained about $200 damage and the truck about $75. The sheriff's office investigated. no charges were filed.

Truck Plunges from Embankment on Wayland Road
A 1.5 ton truck driven by Larry Purcell, 20, of Des Moines, fell 25 feet off an embankment along the Washington Wayland road on Thursday afternoon. Purcell suffered only bruises. the vehicle, owned by Lewis A. Kittle of Winfield, was valued at 4200 dollars. The crash occurred 42 miles north of Wayland after the driver swerved to avoid a road flag and traveled 60 feet on the shoulder before the plunge and rollover. He was charged with failure to have his vehicle under control.

U S Fires Small Nuclear Test at Nevada Site
The United States fired a one kiloton test over Yucca Flat at the Nevada test site, the first of possibly its last series. Witnesses observed a brief flash and a cotton candy cloud as the blast, dubbed Eddy by officials, occurred under a noon sky with no wind. Rural Iowa City Woman Dies After One Car Crash
A 56 year old Iowa City woman, Mrs Anton Maier of Route 3, died after her 1956 Lincoln struck a bridge east of the city on Highway 92. She suffered severe head and facial lacerations, a broken right arm and shock. No other traffic or witnesses were found. The crash occurred about two miles east of Washington city limits. She was en route to the home of her sister in law, Mrs Burdette Stover, Route 3, Washington. Investigation by the Iowa Highway Patrol and the sheriff's office.

Reports of Arms Already Shipped To Formosa Crisis
The State Department said the United States is determined to equip the Chinese Nationalists to meet Red China as Dulles and Eisenhower warn of a serious threat. Reports circulate that about 90 million dollars in military aid has been shipped in three weeks.
