Kalona Historical Society and Mennonite Historical Society sponsor the third Kalona Fall Festival at Kalona Historical Village. The event runs Friday 12 to 9 and Saturday 9 to 6 with home baked bread, apple butter, baked goods, crafts, and open museum buildings.
United Press International reports protests by city and county leaders against higher property valuations. Cedar Rapids City Council protests the increase. Linn County Auditor Merle Kopel Iowans gather at the courthouse. Woodbury County Board protests. Sioux City Council may follow. Polk County plans appeal. Des Moines also decides to appeal.
Iowa Republican Party chair Thomas Stoner said the party is healthy financially and plans to retire about $60,000 debt and build a surplus before next year's campaigns.
A Sac County social worker says a woman earns 700 dollars per month while still receiving Aid to Dependent Children payments and free medical care. The worker refused to name the woman before a legislative study committee, noting the payments are legal under the government ADC formula.
A barn on the Dale K. Gingerich farm four miles southeast of Wellman was destroyed by fire Tuesday night. The 78 by 120 ft wood frame structure housed about 5 000 bales of hay an antique tractor and a wagon. Fire crews arrived after 8 p m and saved nearby buildings and 40 head of cattle with no injuries reported.

A.J. Doty, 31, reports more than 100 inquiries after placing a yard sign that says wife wanted new or used. Calls come from across the United States and Canada, including one from Puerto Rico, with several women and even two men probing dating prospects.
In Washington cabinet briefings indicate the Soviet Union tentatively accepted a freight rate of 16 dollars per ton for U.S. grain shipments. The rate, up from 9.50, would pay American shippers for about one third of Soviet purchases under the 1972 maritime agreement.
Senior Washington County 4-H members may apply to be a 4-H Council nominee with forms due September 20 to the Extension office. The county convention takes place Saturday September 27 at Washington High School at 7 30 p m with club assembly, council installation, and two adults to be honored for meritorious service.
