Tall corn record suffers setback in Cedar Rapids contest
Washington County mayor Harold L. Johnson entered the First Annual Mayor Tall Corn Contest sponsored by the Cedar Rapids Marion Chamber of Commerce finishing no higher than 16th. His stalk reached 106 inches by August 26 1975 after a July 15 start, while a second stalk stood 94 inches at opening and grew just five inches more. The champion, Mayor Robert Blakesley of Independence, saw a 129 inch stalk after starting at 75 inches in July, with the top plant still growing at contest end. The event billed as showing where tall corn truly grows in the Tall Corn State.

Minick will not seek re election to park board post

Downtown Marshalltown Fire Damages Building Heavy Smoke
A downtown Marshalltown blaze caused severe structural damage to one building and smoke and water damage to surrounding blocks. Firefighters were dispatched at 10 58 p m and aided by six area departments. Officials said the fire was controlled near 2 a m and the damage total and cause remain under investigation.

Tentative accord ends NYC teachers strike
A tentative agreement could end a week long walkout by 1.1 million NYC students. UFT President Albert Shanker says ratification by the delegate assembly is possible at 9 a.m. today but approval by about 55 000 teachers remains uncertain. City to hire eighth police officer in Washington
Washington will expand its police force to eight officers to allow round the clock two-man coverage. Police Chief Ken Bauer sought the hire after arguing seven officers prevented full coverage and that one officer cannot safely work alone. Funding comes from $12,000 in liquor profits. The city plans to begin the search immediately.

Freedom Train stranded on Iowa hill requires rescue
The 500-ton Southern Pacific steam locomotive and the 25-car American Freedom Train stalled seven miles south of Minburn, Iowa, on a steep grade. Milwaukee switch engine No. 705 shunted in to pull the halted display south toward Minburn and West Des Moines, overcoming broken rails and a seven-mile stretch of bad track.
