Coldest Iowa towns set new low temperatures
The National Weather Service reported a pleasant weekend ahead but noted Iowa towns dipping into the 30s overnight. Dubuque recorded 34 degrees, breaking the 1923 35 degree mark, while Council Bluffs, Davenport, and Burlington posted new or tied lows for Sept 14, with light frost possible in parts of the east central and northeast counties.

Nelson Pioneer Crafts Festival slated Sept. 21 near Oskaloosa
The 10th Nelson Pioneer Crafts Festival will be held September 21 at the Nelson Pioneer Farm and Museum two miles northeast of Oskaloosa. Demonstrations will cover crafts needed for mid-1800s farm life including wood sawing bread cheese and butter making blacksmithing and weaving. Oldtime tractors thrashers on display tours of the Nelson house an oldtime store and country school are open. The two-story Nelson house, built by Daniel Nelson, was donated to the Mahaska County Historical Society about a decade ago. Admission will be charged and a rustic ham and beans dinner will be served.

Complete tunnel under Frisco Bay
The Bay Area Rapid Transit District runs automated trains through a 3.6 mile trans bay tube signaling completion of the first automated system of its kind in the United States. The last segment of the 71 mile line is now in operation with trains expected at 80 mph through the tube. The trans bay concept was proposed 27 years ago by a joint Army Navy board to ease Bay Bridge traffic, and in 1962 voters approved a 792 million bond for BART construction.
