Waterloo reports the 33rd annual Dairy Cattle Congress and allied expositions closed Sunday as about 10 000 people attended despite a steady downpour. The seven day total reached roughly 165 000, about 20 000 fewer than 1941.
17yearold George Talbott of Malvern killed himself with a .22 rifle at the C N Rogers residence where he roomed, a note to his mother said he could not take it. The incident followed his recent move to begin first days at Simpson College.
A Brady Transport Co. semi trailer spilled eggs and butter west of Davenport after attempting to avoid a four car collision. The truck from Omaha to Chicago was driven by Don Ward of Washington. Other driver Clarence Kuhrt of Davenport is held in Scott County Jail on reckless driving charges.
Waterloo police report a burglary at Harry Barg’s home in which $183 was taken from a bureau drawer, including 133 silver dollars. The thief did not take several gold coins a new gold watch a gold ring about $500 in Russian money some Mexican money or a gun. The crime occurred within the last 10 days and was discovered Sunday morning when Barg opened the drawer to add two silver dollars to his collection.
The German high command released a special communique claiming the sinking of 19 merchant ships two destroyers and one corvette from a heavily escorted convoy in the north Atlantic It was read at a United Press listening post and tied to the big convoy battle reported by Berlin radio with ongoing action in the Atlantic theater.
The army has awarded a second lieutenant commission to Harry John Bispow of Kalona, who entered service through the selective service ten months ago. He is at least the third county selectee to be promoted to a commission.
Washington County gears up for a full county blackout on Thursday September 24 the first in Iowa during Civil Defense efforts. Washington families learn two local Navy men Charles Harvey Simmering 24 and Byron Minear 25 are missing in action on the same ship. No action details or ship name released. Simmering enlisted July 10 1939 served three years. Minear enlisted Mt Pleasant prior to moving to Washington lived with parents at 856 South Fourth Avenue.
Chief of Police Baker reports another tire stolen Saturday night from a car on Washington street. The wheel belonged to Irvin Femn at 814 South Second Avenue. Thieves removed the wheel and tire despite two spares in the unlocked trunk. The theft was found early Sunday morning, indicating the loss occurred late Saturday night.
Mr and Mrs Val Fuhr hosted guests from Muscatine including sister in law Mrs George Will brother and sister in law Mr and Mrs John Schmitt and Mr and Mrs Jim Lane.

A United States Navy recruiting service representative will be at the Washington post office Tuesday September 15 from 1 30 p m to 4 00 p m to interview prospective applicants for enlistment. Men ages 17 to 50 are urged to contact the recruiter. a birth certificate is required for applicants under 21. Those who apply may choose their own enlistment date or be enlisted immediately if they wish.
Alfred Bean, father of John William Bean, arrives from Newagton Connecticut as federal and police search for the 17 year old who wore a forged army officer’s uniform. FBI in Des Moines had interviewed the boy and planned further inquiry. The case may end with return home if no serious charge is found.
President Roosevelt reports lend lease deliveries totaling 5.129 billion dollars in 18 months and calls for stripping the civilian economy to the bone to reach maximum war production. He notes Britain, China, and Russia have produced more weapons and warns only full ally effort can turn the tide. He emphasizes expanding lend lease supplies and unity among the United Nations. Separately, John Koerble and family return to Milwaukee after guest visit. Koerble misrepresented credentials. Alfred Bean, a WWI veteran now in a Connecticut aircraft plant, is mentioned.
