Authorities probe theft of $50 sticks of dynamite from a carrier car reported last week about 10 miles from a Burlington Zephyr explosion site earlier Monday. No arrests announced as investigation continues.
Des Moines reports state highway patrol stops around 100 drivers daily for speeds over 40 mph with many fines issued. Officer C A Knee notes efforts to curb speeding to meet Roosevelt and Wilson targets. A future proclamation may raise the cap to five dollars per mile per hour and gasoline rationing could sharply reduce passenger cars on Iowa highways.
A Cedar county posse searched the countryside north of West Branch for Ruth Madsen 26 after her husband was found shot to death in bed. Madsen's body was discovered by his brother eight miles northeast of West Branch. He left two sons Richard 7 and Ronald 4 in a soybean field three miles south of the home.
Tom Larson, 45, father of three boys, was sentenced to Fort Madison penitentiary for five years after pleading guilty to receiving stolen goods. He admitted disposing of loot sourced from his sons’ burglaries. His sons Charles 17, Dave 15, and Richard 10 confessed to multiple robberies.
O S Serrand, 80, died from injuries after a buggy ride in Rolfe Iowa turned fatal when a frightened horse ran away on Highway 44. F B Grant, also of Rolfe, was with him as the buggy overturned into a ditch. Serrand's wife remains seriously ill along with a son and daughter.
Vice President Henry A. Wallace stopped in Des Moines en route to Los Angeles for an address tonight. Mrs. Wallace stayed behind in Des Moines and did not accompany him. He departed by plane Monday night and said he would return to Des Moines later in the week.
Washington, Sept 15. Rear Admiral Blandy, head of naval ordnance, says the United States now holds the balance of striking power in the northwest Pacific after a 6980 mile tour of Pacific forces. He confirms a real second front exists in the southwest Pacific and urges continued offensive operations.
John William Bean, 17, was picked up Friday evening for impersonating a U S army officer. He met with the federal district attorney in Ottumwa and a hearing was planned for today. A decision on disposition was not announced, with provisional plans to send him to Newington Connecticut after possible federal probation. His father Alfred Bean, an employee at Pratt and Whitney, joined the boy in Ottumwa.
Judge J G Patterson of Oska loosa impaneled the September term grand jury this morning. Charles Custer of Washington township was named foreman. Other jurors include Roy Gardner West Chester F R Lewis Wellman Ward Essley Marion township Anton Keifer Richmond H L Huber Cedar township and O W Schmitter Clay township.
Marshall Baker aged 20 of Keokuk was badly hurt when his car left highway 218 on the incline south of Crawfordsville. He suffered a severe left forearm fracture and multiple cuts and bruises. The vehicle plunged down a 30 foot embankment and overturned before stopping upright. Baker was extricated and hospitalized about one o'clock with two unnamed bystander aid.
A Legion meeting tonight features a junior Auxiliary playset presenting a version of a senior Auxiliary session. The program begins at eight o'clock.
Coast guard enlistments include Hubert H. Lohrer of Washington and Harold F. Moothart of Wellman. Navy enlistments list Don ald E. Boyer and Donald L. Morrison of Washington. Morrison joins the navy V-7 and V-1 classes at the State University of Iowa.
Charles E. Lemley died at 2 30 this morning at his home 921 West Madison street after a three year illness He would have been 74 next month He served as assessor from 1922 to 1939 and was in business with Lemley Yard From 1925 to 1940 he partnered in the Lemley Yard insurance firm Funeral services Thursday at 10 30 at L A Jones funeral home Rev George Kerr will officiate Burial in Elm Grove cemetery He was born October 15 1868 in this county to Caleb and Ellen Lemley Survived by two daughters Mrs R Wolff Shoemaker Indianapolis and Sarah Jane Lemley Washington one son Charles Edward Lemley Jr Burlington and one brother Caleb Lemley Iowa City
County civilian defense leaders from various towns met with County Commander Lyan Norton to plan a county wide blackout set for Thursday night September 24. The blackout starts at 10:00 p m and ends at 10 60 p m with lights out and travel halted. Airplanes will patrol to monitor blackout completeness and watchers will be on hand.
A county meeting for township AAA chairmen at the Washington county office outlined election plans for September 18 at 8:00 PM. Township committeemen and delegates will be chosen for 1943, with wives of participating farmers newly eligible to vote and hold office. Voting sites listed across multiple townships.
A Victory Day auction near the theater features a Knotek Bros pure bred Duroc gilt and dozens of donated items for bond buyers. The sale aims to attract farmers to purchase war bonds with proceeds supporting the war effort, promising valuable goods and the gilt as a centerpiece.
Valuable merchandise including livestock, food, apparel and misc items valued at about 4150 will go free to the highest war stamps buyer at the Victory Auction Wednesday at 2 30 in front of the State theater. A new aviation program at the airport and junior college enrolled a class of 26 trainees. Fifteen students began flying today under instructors, with two more planes and instructors arriving soon. The cohort includes Navy and Army personnel and named local recruits. expanded facilities and a new classroom are being prepared.

United Press reports the battle of Stalingrad intensifies with German forces claiming capture of a main railroad station while Soviet air and cavalry reinforcements arrive as Moscow notes heavy pressure and a fragile Soviet defense.
Washington hears Major General Hershey, selective service chief, say the army size will surpass the 4.5 million target set by General Marsh at the height of mobilization. He told a House committee the new goal is not yet public and could rise toward 10 to 13 million troops.
Two locomotives collided on adjacent tracks at a Rock Island yard switch injuring engineer Ross Steele of Eldon. A lighter switch engine suffered a severe arm cut. the heavier freight engine was only slightly damaged. No main line damage or traffic delay reported.
