Jesse L Patterson 26 of Winfield died in an England airplane crash on Aug 23. He joined the army in June 1941 and served as a technical sergeant. Surviving: three brothers and four sisters. Mount Ayr: 83-year-old farmer Charles Wing killed by an infuriated bull after trampling a horse, tractor, and car. Wing and his bachelor brother Leo live on a farm 12 miles NW of Mount Ayr.
A Friday afternoon blaze at the Farmers Mercantile Co. warehouse in Red Oak caused about $4000 in damage. The fire destroyed 70 tractor tires and damaged farm machinery. the cause of the fire was not determined.
Lapp Laboratories Inc of Nevada Iowa was fined 225 dollars in federal court for nine violations of the federal pure food and drug act. Judge Charles A Dewey ordered 25 dollars on each count for manufacturing stock and poultry foods and remedies.
Chester M. Vogt 27 of Fairfield told Sheriff Mier he is ready to go anytime after previously refusing a physical exam ordered by the draft board. He said draft officials made him angry and in a rage claimed he was German. Vogt, arrested by federal agents, is jailed in default of 5000 dollars bond and will appear in federal court Tuesday.
Charles J. Kloster, 42, of Remsen, was killed Friday afternoon at Ovens when he touched a 6600 volt power line while on an AAA steel corn crib. He fell 16 feet, breaking his neck. Survived by wife and two stepchildren.
Dr. D. E. Kulp, 72, of Spirit Lake, died Friday when his car and a second vehicle collided at a rural road intersection a mile north of Grover. Ed Timons of Grover, driving west, was also involved and treated at Coleman hospital for cuts and scratches.
A fire on the fourth floor of the Grand hotel in Keokuk was extinguished with no great damage. Guests were evacuated safely.

The University of Iowa military department donated World War I and field guns to a Johnson county scrap metal drive increasing the county total by twelve tons. The four guns had stood outside the armory for years and yielded about 800 pounds of salvaged rubber from their wheels. The weapons were gifts from a former Iowa City mayor.

FBI agents pursued Robert Taylor Bailey a Fort Bragg deserter as a suspect in the fatal slayings of two Wisconsin social workers, Miss Neil Pietrangeli and Miss Dorothy Baun, whose bodies were found beside a Minnesota highway after a Tuesday checkbook cashing in Le Sueur.
Mrs. A. A Conger of Long Beach California died September 7 after two years of ill health. Funeral held in California with services at 3 30 p m and burial in Sunny Side mausoleum. Survived by daughter Dr Mabel A Conger of Long Beach and by siblings in Washington and California.
The burning army plane crashed through the Curtis-Wright plant roof in Buffalo on September 12, killing ten. Eight of 41 injured were in critical condition, including pilot J Bertram Burnell, 33, who bailed out late yesterday during test flight.
Mrs Boyd E Dunbar and her son Dallas Dean left yesterday for Washington D C to visit her husband Pvt first class Boyd Dunbar now stationed there for two months.
