Des Moines column notes revised September government forecast for Iowa corn yields at 56 bushels per acre boosting production by 30 million bushels in August. Sept 1 yield up three bushels from Aug 1, with total forecast production at 646,112,000 bushels versus 464,814,000 last year.
John H. Gillespie named central Iowa district manager to administer the latest Office of Defense Transportation order. He will oversee 33 counties from Des Moines. A southeast Iowa office opens in Davenport with Paul J. Kurtkamp in charge and a southwestern office in Omaha, Nebraska.
DES MOINES reports that Iowa war production remains steady despite workers leaving for the armed forces. Edward A. Kimball, head of the Iowa Industrial and Defense council, says production is holding, while other officials warn a coming pinch as selective service pulls more workers from industry.
Fort Dodge district court heard guilty pleas from two men as part of a Webster county theft ring case. Eight defendants faced charges for a summer crime wave. Tom Larson admitted receiving stolen jewelry linked to his sons, with Judge H E Fry reserving decision.
Joseph W. Martin, GOP national chairman, forecast substantial gains in the house and senate. He said Republicans would carry six states Massachusetts New York Pennsylvania Ohio Illinois and California in the November election citing dissatisfaction with the New Deal and public belief the government would be safer under Republicans.
President Roosevelt said it seems unnecessary to call 18 and 19 year olds into service before year’s end and that current facilities cap enlistment. He also said plans are under discussion to curb enlistment and let selective service direct service needs, with navy volunteers rising to about 700.
Des Moines enlistment report lists Albert Edward Schulze and Howard Harold Clawson of Riverside enlisting in the navy and Richard C. Young of Wellman enlisting in the marines with a large rise in officer personnel records noted.

Olcott describes health, camp layout, and routines, through Red Cross channels.
President Roosevelt outlined a near full implementation of the Baruch committee's mileage rationing recommendations by Monday. A rubber administrator will be appointed under Donald W. Nelson, and local boards will largely run the nationwide program. The 35 mile per hour speed limit should be enforced more strictly to curb mileage.
Senate and House leaders failed to settle on anti inflation bill form and planned a conference with the president for late afternoon. Senator Barkley said no agreement had been reached after two hours of talks in Speaker Rayburn's office.

A large barn at the C. E. Beaty place 715 West Monroe street was destroyed by fire this afternoon. Firemen aimed to save the Beaty residence as the flames spread from the barn. The cause was believed to be a bonfire nearby and grain and wood stored there were lost. insurance was reported to cover the loss.
