Eight killed in Virgin Islands golf course attack

Masked gunmen opened fire at Fountain Valley Golf Course clubhouse near Christiansted, killing eight people and wounding three. Police and federal agents launched an island wide manhunt with helicopters and reinforcements from St Thomas. victims included tourists and course staff. The robbers looted wallets and about $700 before fleeing toward central hills as residents were told to stay indoors.

Israeli Troops Enter Southern Lebanon in Pursuit

Tel Aviv reports Israeli forces crossed into southern Lebanon chasing Arab guerrillas. A patrol killed one guerrilla and another infiltrator in a earlier clash. an Israeli soldier and a guerrilla died. Israeli spokesman said the raid involved no Israeli casualties.

Two Doctors Leave Washington Worsening Local Doctor Shortage

Dr Edward Vosika and his partner Dr G E Montgomery will exit Washington soon. Montgomery plans to move to Dickinson North Carolina for a group practice while Vosika eyes Terre Haute Indiana for ER work and private practice. Sept 27 will be the last day of the Montgomery Vosika Clinic.

Bereaved Israeli delegation returns home with slain comrades

Israeli Olympic officials brought back 11 team members killed in Munich, wearing black ribbons as a sign of mourning. Ten bodies returned on a chartered jet. the 11th, David Berger, flew to Cleveland. Inbar said the games should have been canceled. German and Munich officials pledged explanations.

Council confirms beef prices still high

The Cost of Living Council said many supermarket chains have not lowered beef prices despite lower wholesale cattle and meat costs. Iowa official concedes 30 day residency rule unconstitutional

Secretary of State Melvin Synhorst said the 30 day residency requirement for Iowa voters is unconstitutional and should be struck down by the courts. He agreed not to enforce the rule against new residents like Thomas Davis of Grinnell and to support an injunction barring enforcement statewide.

Occasional showers and thundershowers are expected in east central and southern sections with a chance of scattered light showers or drizzle elsewhere. Red troops capture Tien Phuoc amid Da Nang threat

Communist forces swept into Tien Phuoc 36 miles south of Da Nang and fought house to house to seize the town. Saigon rushed 2,000 reinforcements as North Vietnamese and Viet Cong widened attacks across Vietnam, hitting Quang Tri City with 1,700 artillery rounds and targeting a South Vietnamese division HQ southwest of Saigon.

State denies insurance rate change in Iowa

Iowa Insurance Commissioner William H Huff rejected a request for an 11.5 percent homeowners rate increase filed by Insurance Services Office of Iowa representing 275 insurers. Approval would raise next year’s costs by about 4.6 million and push broader deductibles, reducing policy choices and risking loss coverage for glass breakage theft and vandalism. The decision urges deductible use only when loss experience warrants it and allows a formal hearing within 30 days.

Five Year Old Woman Struck By Car On East Washington Street

A five year old Washington girl Rhonda Seering daughter of Mr and Mrs James R Green was struck by a car on East Washington Street near the Snack Shack this morning. She suffered lacerations and a possible broken leg and was taken first to Washington County hospital then Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. Police say the vehicle was driven by Bill Redlinger of rural Washington who was headed east when she dashed into the street.

Ottumwa Girl Killed in Bicycle Car Collision

In Ottumwa a 15 year old girl Rhonda Weeks was killed when her bicycle collided with a car on a city street bridge over a culvert. Teammate David Hall 15 and his 13 year old brother Kevin were listed in fair condition at St Josephs Hospital Ottumwa.

Iowa official pledges continued child support crackdown

Iowa Social Services Commissioner James Gillman vowed to press delinquent parents for child support while respecting a court order halting the denial of ADC payments to women who refuse to help locate the father. He expects 36 retroactive cases totaling about 20000 dollars, largely funded by federal and state sources.
