Bradford Ellis Given One Year Suspended Sentence

District Court Judge Michael Enich suspended a one year jail term for Bradford L. Ellis of Washington and granted parole to the county sheriff after Ellis was found guilty of breaking and entering a private home during the night a few months ago. In the same session Dallas W. Leichty of rural Mt. Pleasant was fined $15 and costs for speeding and appealed an earlier justice court ruling.

Ivo Grady Retires From Kalona Stockyard After 54 Years

Kalona longtime stock buyer Ivo Grady retires after 54 years at Grady Stockyard founded in 1881 by his grandfather Calvin Grady. New owners Wilbur Swartzendruber and Ike Yoder keep the yard name. Grady plans to assist during transition while staying in Kalona.

Mail box vandalism prompts sheriff inquiry north of Wellman

Vandals ripped out mail boxes at several farm homes area north of Wellman Tuesday night. Washington County sheriff's officers were asked to investigate the incident. One family reported their box torn out and carried away between 6 and 10 p.m. last night while away from home. Denver Pratt sues Emil Hesseschwerdt in Washington County district court seeking 12500 in actual damages and 25000 in punitive damages from the Kalona resident for an April 7 automobile crash on highway one one mile south of Kalona. Attorney General Richard Turner filed suits against Waukon Lansing and Humboldt in Allamakee and Humboldt counties seeking injunctions and penalties of 200 dollars per day for each day of violation of a cease and desist order from the Iowa Air Pollution Control Commission.

Wellman Council Rejects Frank and Fran Tavern Liquor Permit

Wellman town council refused renewal of the Frank and Fran Tavern liquor license at Tuesday’s meeting. The tavern may appeal. The decision follows an August 25 incident in which town marshal Harry Finley was struck with his billy club during an arrest of David Paul Hoff, who was charged with assault to do great bodily harm and released on $500 bond after a preliminary hearing.

Anderson assails county legal service at Riverside fund-raiser

Tracy Anderson, candidate for Washington County Attorney, told Democrats that current county attorney John Baldridge has refused to appear in minor courts to prosecute misdemeanors. He cited the Iowa Code requiring appearance and argued Baldridge has repeatedly refused to leave Washington city, prompting JP and mayoral requests to be denied.
