Paris dispatch reports Premier Robert Schuman moving quickly to shore up his new government by approving a 2,500 franc bonus for private industry workers and easing wage demands to placate the socialist bloc. The cabinet, unchanged except for key posts, signals an intent to curb strikes amid inflation.
Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at two o'clock at Sherman's funeral home with Rev. T. C. Polk officiating. Pallbearers were K. D. Callister Otis Jones Leo Malley and Lester Cupp. Burial followed in Keota cemetery.
The six day old truck strike spreads to New Jersey as about 3400 of Newark Local 478 AFL drivers walk out at midnight. Deliveries to New York and Essex Union counties drop, with 75 percent cut estimated. Other locals weigh joining Friday, risking over twenty thousand drivers on strike.
O. W. Schmitter, Herbert Campbell and Carl T. Anderson, three Washington county farmers, are named to receive Goodyear Tire & Rubber soil conservation plaques and certificates this year. They will travel to Des Moines for a banquet in the Hotel Savery where Iowa’s top county conservation efforts are honored.
Final rites for Mrs. Mary Ann Fox were held Sunday afternoon at two o'clock in the Jones funeral home with Rev FP. W. Kestwood in charge. Pall bearers were Ralph and Clyde Pratt, Lee Holland, Tom Duncan, Bob Lytle and W. F. E. Howell. Burial was in Ehn Grove cemetery.

The second annual four district Conservation Field Day and Contour Plowing Contest nears completion with plans for next Saturday September 11 at the Carl T. Anderson farm in Washington county. More than 5 000 attended last year and a larger crowd is expected to view soil conservation demonstrations and the contour plowing match. Contest entrants from Iowa Johnson Keokuk and Washington counties include Cloyd C Fuller Donald J Dillin Emil Novy William R Spratt Joe Mather Bruce Taylor Charles R Bond and James F Lutz. The event features judging led by Chuck Worchester and a panel from Farm News KWPC and county service staff. Airplane dusting demos farm road work terracing and equipment displays are set for the morning with a Washington high school band concert and mass meeting at 2 PM.
Anderson hosts day with Ray Beckman George Browning Clyde Spry and Mr Worcester of WMT to address county furrow queens awards plowmen and demonstrations. Sponsored by Washington county district soil commissioners with extension and soil conservation service cooperation.
The Doudna Packing plant in Columbus Junction has been closed for two weeks while a petition in the U S district court in Davenport proceeds. A creditors meeting is set for Davenport on September 15, indicating the plant’s status as a major local industry.
Defense sources estimate the 1950 fiscal year budget for the armed services will rise to about 17.5 billion dollars. Defense Secretary James Forrestal and aides prepare the first air field military budget as the air force and naval arms push spending higher for the year beginning near July 1.
President Truman launched his Michigan campaign on Labor Day denouncing the Republican Congress for high prices and housing inaction. He praised Sen. Arthur Vandenberg, predicted a two-party choice in November, and urged voters to back the Democrats for a square deal. He spoke to about 25,000 in Grand Rapids and planned a Detroit city hall address and stops in Lansing Pontiac and Flint.
Nick Roth aged 62, long-time Washington resident, died at his home 121 Clivarton Street at 2 45 Sunday morning after illness since May. Born January 16 1879 in Washington County he married Floretta Fishburn in Crawfordsville June 28 1905. Funeral Wednesday at Jones Funeral Home with Dr. Fred Miller officiating and Elm Grove Cemetery burial. He leaves wife, a sister Mrs J W Garrick and a brother Jacob. another brother J S Roth preceded him in death.
The 1949 defense budget for the army navy and air force totals just over 1.25 billion dollars. If costs keep rising at the current rate, expenditure could reach about 22 billion dollars by 1950, with only a major change in international conditions or public mood likely altering that projection.
Labor leaders and Democratic officials marked Labor Day by urging repeal of the Taft Hartley Act and blaming Republicans for high prices. AFL head Green and CIO chief Murray led the push to elect a pro labor Congress.
In Boyne City Michigan the chamber of commerce offers supervised daycare for local children three times weekly easing mothers' schedules. The program relies on chamber members acting as baby tender guardians to provide care during those periods.
Rosamond Sojka, president of Washington county 4-H girls, is chosen to represent 236 members as Furrow Queen for the second annual conservation field day and contour plowing match on Saturday at Carl T. Anderson farm. Sojka has seven years in 4-H and belongs to the Formerettes club. other counties will present queens at the contest next Saturday.
United Press reports traffic crashes across Iowa killed three people. Kenneth Rumelhart aged 18 died when a car left the road near Cou Falls in Johnson County injuring Carl Kuhlmann Lawrence Denneny and Robert Grads all 17 who were treated in Cedar Rapids hospital. Driver George Shepard 40 of Omaha was not injured when his semi trailer collided with another truck in Des Moines. James Thomais 25 of Popejoy died in a two car wreck on a county road near Popejoy.
Weather bulletin notes mainly cloudy skies in Iowa with occasional showers tonight and Tuesday. Cooler conditions arrive Tuesday, especially in the extreme northwest, as nocturnal lows drop to the mid fifties to low sixties and Tuesday highs reach the mid sixties to lower seventies.
John Porter returned from Seattle to drive a car for Mrs Robert Porter and Roberta Ann. Roberta boarded the U S A T Shanks in Seattle on September 3 to join Lt Porter in making a home in Tokio. The ocean voyage is expected to last about ten days. Mary Kay Redlinger of Des Moines is visiting for Labor Day.
Communists stormed Berlin city hall forcing cancellation of the assembly and debating seizure of city government while Soviet police blocked exits. American reporters and a British official were assaulted. some 40 Western journalists and 200 Germans were trapped inside. Simultaneously Four Americans missing in the Soviet zone sparked concern.
