A thief stole Keith Larson's suit case from his parked car in Cedar Rapids on Monday. Before taking the bag the burglar removed $1,000 worth of war bonds and hid them in the glove compartment. He left a note asking Larson to inform the police. Larson lives in Washington.
Iowa City readers learn that State University of Iowa announces 38 faculty appointments. Many fills replace staff in the armed forces or war positions. Two professors return from two year war leave, Philip Meachem law and BK Lane engineering. Ten new appointments are in the medical college, the largest single department addition.
Sioux City residents reeled as Edward J. Tidd 45 a Chicago St Paul Minneapolis and Omaha railroad switchman was fatally shot in a local tavern John Lorenzen also known as Jim Miller a bartender suffered a critical head wound at St Vincent hospital Edward L Moran Woodbury County attorney said evidence indicated Lorenzen shot Tidd then killed himself after an argument
Dubuque resident Leon Sanders 4 percent, who police say entered the wrong home Tuesday morning, was fined 100 dollars and costs in police court later that day after objecting to leaving.
Mrs. Martha Brown left Waterloo on Tuesday to join her husband, a war worker, in Los Angeles. Friends hope the trip goes smoothly after she suffered injuries from a washing machine accident, broken glasses from heat, forehead gashes while cooking, a wrist sprain, and a dog bite during preparations.
The War Department outlined plans to reduce the Army after Germany's defeat using a priority system based on service length overseas combat credit and parenthood. Japan war needs will take first priority. millions would move to civilian life over months as surplus personnel are drawn from Europe. Navy demobilization proceeds separately toward a 391,000 peak by next July.

Washington hardware dealers received authority to sell ammunition to hunters but only in small quantities. They may offer one box of shotgun shells and one box of rifle shells per customer for an 80 day period, with a hunter’s license required for purchase. A mark will indicate a purchase, valid for 300 days, and farmers who already bought ammunition for the current quarter are not eligible now.
A friend of the family offers 25 to anyone who finds Hilda Farrier a six year old Washington girl drowned Monday in the Cedar River near Conesville A large search by Muscatine and Washington men plus Conesville community members continued through yesterday and last night. Funeral services were held for Leo Levert drowned at the same place and time whose body was recovered quickly. Levert was an experienced swimmer and friends suspect cramps.
