Des Moines figures from the Iowa Taxpayers Association show a four million dollar rise in 1945 property taxes, offset by nearly two million in county tax cuts. City and school taxes rise, with city taxes up about one million and school taxes up five million, indicating a net increase in overall tax liability.
Richland mourns Ben Wade a sailor who served 41 years in the Navy. He died in the Marines hospital on Staten Island New York after a 1940 injury when his ship was sunk by German bombers. Wade recovered and later returned to sea before his death.
Scattergood boarding school in West Branch, Iowa, reopens under Iowa Friends with an expected enrollment of 30 from several states. The cohort includes an American Indian and a native Bolivian, and a four year accredited high school program will be offered. The site served Quaker youths from 1890 to 1943 with a gap and refugee hostel use during 1939 to 1943.
Twenty four of thirty six Cedar Rapids Horsemen club members were hospitalized Monday night in two Cedar Rapids facilities after a suspected food or water poisoning from a two day 70 mile ride to Marengo. Eighteen at Mercy and six at St. Luke's reported noncritical conditions. The group fell ill near Ely south of Cedar Rapids where the trip neared its end.
Police seek an unidentified man who accosted a 16 year old girl on Sunday and forced her into his car. After two blocks he pushed her from the vehicle and she was treated at a hospital for facial and leg bruises.

Relatives host a cooperative farewell dinner with guests including Hubert Lee Wilson on leave from Hawaii and Clifford Porter. The Farm Bureau announced township meetings to elect directors and discuss policies. Sessions run September 6 through 13 in Riverside Iowa. Milford, Cloyee Stewart, Marion, Prairie Flower, Shilos, 76 Center, Clay, Dutch Creek, Lime Creek, Kalona and Franklin areas with named hosts and directors.
The Blue Barron orchestra presents a fall season show on Thursday Sept 7 at Oakwood Pavilion Wellman directed by Tiny Wolfe. The 350 pound comedian vocalist substitutes on baton while Blue Barron serves in the army. The program features swing by the band vocals by Tiny Cliff Grass and The Three Blue Notes plus lively entertainment for dancing and fun.
Twelve Washington county men left by bus for Burlington and then by train to St Louis to report today at Jefferson Barracks. Six proceed to pre induction exams while the other six go to induction after qualifying earlier. Names listed include Bernard Pauly Joseph Crossett Robert Darbyshire George Patterson John Whittaker Ray West Lyle Luckey Warren Schaeffer Milo Zeek Maurice Rose Roy Hardy William Trotter.
Postmaster M C DeLong urges parental cooperation to stop vandalism of mail boxes. Children have scratched paint and filled boxes with dirt as painting work proceeds, violating federal law while the boxes near completion are marred.
The Barron group delights patrons with a varied mix of Old and New favorites. The band preserves its famed tradition through skillful arrangement and faithful execution of songs that made Barron famous.
A river tragedy in Muscatine County leaves Leo Severt 54 and Hilda Farrier 16 dead after wading in a treacherous hole filled Cedar River near Conesville. Roy Farrier and Indiana Severt escaped, Lea Severt aided by her father as rescue crews search for Miss Farrier. Leo Severt a World War I veteran born 1889 in Fremont and long tied to Washington, Iowa, is survived by three brothers and a sister. funeral arrangements set. Hilda Farrier born 1928 in Washington lived locally, survived by her father and two sisters Indiana and Leela plus three half brothers. Funeral plans for both are noted.
The American Legion Auxiliary announces a rummage sale Friday and Saturday in the west side room of the former Washington Fruit Market. General chairman Mrs Cloyee Stewart leads a committee including Mrs Jay Brewer Mrs Leonardy and Mrs Everett Burham with help from other Auxiliary members. They will receive articles Thursday afternoon for the sale. If unable to bring clothing to the room assistance can be arranged.
The new school year begins in Washington with a full teaching staff except for a vacant high school principal post. Mathematics head Della Patton suffers a fractured hip after a library fall and will miss weeks. plans to fill her math classes are uncertain. A shortened schedule follows an assembly led by Rev. George Kerr and Supt. Schell.
Co Vv Crull Robert Arthur and Dr A C Peterson of the chamber airport committee urged council to prepare a petition for a Washington municipal airport bond election. A $45 000 bond issue petition will be circulated once enough signatures are gathered. No council action was requested. The meeting mainly dealt with routine matters and police hire changes.
A bus carried workers from Washington to the H. J. Heing plant in Muscatine for tomato processing. The company recruited 20 to workers locally to prevent waste of the large tomato crop by securing enough help at the plant.
Weekend guests of Mrs Myrtle Rhodes included her daughter Zora Rhodes son Francis Rhodes daughter in law Mrs Roba Epeant and niece Gail Moody all from Chicago.
U S naval and air forces report destroying or damaging 41 Japanese ships and 107 planes in a four day bombardment of the Bonin and Volcano Islands. The drive along a 4000 mile front includes actions from the Kurile Islands to the Dutch East Indies and new air strikes on the Philippines and Wake. Cruiser destroyer carrier planes and Liberators joined in against targets near Japan.
British and Canadian forces push along the Adriatic coast advancing on Rimini as they expand a bridgehead north of the Conca river. British Sixth Army nears Lujea and Prato on the Tyrrhenian shore while German forces fiercely defend Rimini and nearby towns.
Allied dispatches report Patton s 3rd army reaching the Moselle between Metz and Nancy with unconfirmed word of Strassbourg on the German border. British forces push beyond Antwerp while Canadian troops near Boulogne and flee attempts by German garrisons to escape by sea.
Moscow reports a large Soviet offensive breaching the Narow river line and pushing toward East Prussia. Troops reached 28 miles from East Prussia and captured Brasov, moving toward Transylvania and Hungary while attacking near Bucharest and within 124 miles of Yugoslavia. The 2nd White Russian Army pressed a 35 mile assault southwest of Lonzha, widening the break in German defenses.
