Gov. Robert D. Ray asserts Iowa has led in fighting the energy crisis and conserving fuel. He cites public reluctance but says Iowans are ready to conserve and have done so in the past. He may send Millhone or Van Nostrand to the Project Independence meeting in Kansas City.
Assistant Senate Republican leader Robert P. Griffin urged the public to back President Ford's plan to defer pay raises for 3.5 million federal workers. He said constituents should contact their congressmen to counter union lobbying as Congress weighs Ford's delay from October 1 to January 1. Senator Gale W. McGee pledged a Senate vote to overturn the delay.
The Washington Jaycees report a 1974 local total of 1350 dollars pledged to the Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon, a county record. Donations came from all parts of the county and some from neighboring areas, with thanks to Young's TV and Chau Tau Motel for headquarters and TV access.
Washington County and the City of Washington discuss joint law enforcement options with a shared communications system likely first. Proposals include moving city police into the county jail and consolidating offices, while 1975 paving plans are cut to 30 blocks and auxiliary police numbers rise as sewer and tree projects proceed.
A 20-year-old Providence man hijacked an Eastern Airlines DC9 after landing at Laguardia, holding Captain Lewis Whittaker at knife and axe point for nearly four hours and demanding 10,000 dollars for the poor. Whittaker received non life threatening wounds and was treated at the airport health station.
A call to action urges all residents to pledge or contribute to the Washington Community Center for Creative Arts. Rex Lee is asked to collect donations by Monday September 9, with pickup options available by phone. Donations should be made payable to Washington Community Center for Creative Arts.
A Washington Iowa Crane Plant gift of 12000 in Crane Products and a 6000 donation from Washingtons Men's Club push the Community Center building fund toward its goal. Other clubs have pledged 3000 from Rotary 3000 from Kiwanis and 1000 from Optimist Club.

Keith G. Shaffer manager of the Crane Company in Washington Iowa announced a $12,000 pledge toward the Community Center. The Crane Company will supply building products for use in 1975 from the Washington operation’s net earnings and funds will be provided through Crane products rather than cash.
For the second straight day, unseasonably cool air brought record low temperatures to Iowa cities. Eight locations posted new daily lows with Burlington at 39 and Dubuque at 38 marking the coldest readings for this early fall. Burlington surpassed 46 in 1902 and Dubuque topped the 1891 standard by two degrees. Waterloo recorded 34, breaking the 1928 record of 40.
A three year Iowa population report shows net in migration of 32 000 from 1970 to 1973 reversing earlier out migration. Births fell since 1954 while deaths rose, farm population declined slowly, and industrial growth with 25 588 new jobs in 1973 boosted employment. Polk Story and Warren counties led in gains. Des Moines and Johnson counties led in out migration.
