The regular board meeting is set for 7:30 p.m. on September 9, open to the public.

Kleese to Represent District Six on New Area Education Board
Ralph Kleese of Washington won the convention vote to serve as director for district six on the yet to be formed Area Ten education agency. He captured 81.1 percent against Dr. Jack Droz who had 18.9 percent. District six includes Clear Creek Highland Lone Tree Mid Prairie and Washington districts plus part of Iowa City. United Press International reports teachers walked picket lines delaying classes in more than 30 districts. In New Castle County Delaware 55 000 students were sent home after a pay dispute with the state government led nine of eleven districts to shut down. Newark district saw only 220 of 850 teachers report to work as Freeport Illinois ended its strike and Oak Park began a new one amid salary and contract disputes. Negotiations were to resume later with unions pressing for a binding grievance procedure and mediator involvement.

An accident where a truck backed into a utility pole carrying electrical wires sparked two fires in Washington. A swung neutral wire overheated lines near Wagon Wheel Tap at 521 East Seventh and later at 626 North Fifth in the Charles Churchill home. Major oil firms indicted over gasoline bid collusion
Seven large oil companies including Exxon Mobil Texaco Shell Gulf Sunoco and Amoco were indicted by a New York state grand jury on charges of restraining price competition in selling gasoline to state agencies.
