Original 1775 Hulbert Flag sparks Betsy Ross debate

Suffolk County Historical Society on Long Island challenges Betsy Ross as originator of the first American flag. The John Hulbert flag inscription, carried by Hulbert's Third Regiment company from Fort Ticonderoga to Philadelphia in 1775, is seen by visitors at a New York World's Fair exhibit. Repair crews reportedly found the banner in Hulbert’s house walls. The flag features six pointed stars in cross shapes on a blue field ending at the sixth stripe. The NY group suggests Washington may have drawn the idea from Hulbert’s banner, seen by Continental Congress members in Philadelphia late 1775.
