A Potta wattamie county grand jury indicted Catherine Johnson, 42, of Council Bluffs, on a first degree murder charge. She is accused of killing her divorced husband Henry Christensen, 58, who was found shot to death in the garage at his home last June 21. Johnson is held without bond.
Des Moines tale reports Walter Fish Payette and A Ek Stennett Creston along with three others escaped from Fort Des Moines and are to be arraigned in municipal court for stealing L R Fillman’s automobile to aid their breakout. Keokuk police recovered the car.
Iowa City residents vote 1529 yes 581 no to issue 62500 for a city park swimming pool funded by a three quarter tax. Donations from civic groups cover costs. Pool measures 80 by 165 feet and is set to open in the 1942 season per city engineers.
Whitney Gilliland, then district judge, ordered a county grand jury in Pottawattamie to probe local liquor laws. August Heuwinkle, jury foreman, said the panel passed it up. Roy Smith, county attorney, said no report was made. Gilliland resigned to practice in Waterloo after urging the jury to stay through summer.
John Dare of Sioux City pleaded guilty and faces transfer to Sioux City on a fugitive draft evasion warrant. Rex E. Blott, brought from Peoria Illinois, had bond set at one thousand dollars and said his sect Jehovahs Witnesses would raise it.
Ben Russell Kelly aged 26 died in a Sioux City hospital from injuries after being struck by an Omaha railroad train in South Sioux City Nebraska. No witnesses explained the accident. A bag of perfume samples was found near the tracks.
Gov George A Wilson and Iowa creamery men failed to gain relief from federal oleomargarine standards. Senator Guy Gillette informed Governor Wilson that the ruling by Paul McNutt would go into effect tomorrow, allowing flavoring and coloring that dairy interests oppose.
Des Moines reports Governor George A. Wilson urged President Roosevelt and national defense leaders to reconsider a 20 percent cut in domestic washing machine production. The request comes amid wartime industrial adjustments and supply concerns.
W. C. McCrory, a farmer southeast of town, was attacked by a bull. His collie Brownie stepped in and drove the animal away. McCrory sustained chest and back bruises a left thigh and a left eye injury.
Sheriff HH. M. Putnam reports the county jail is empty at the residence corner of West Second Street and North Avenue Bd. Only a brief earlier release for 20 minutes during a sentencing touched the house, making this the first such emptiness in years while awaiting the next inmate.
In Paris and the occupied zone three more German troops were wounded and a French collaborationist killed. Marcel Gitton, ex Communist deputy turned collaborator, died from wounds in Paris. Other victims were reportedly German officers shot in isolation cases on Wednesday and Thursday.
Out of town contestants seized the top three prizes in the Washington Chamber of Commerce summer amateur contest. Lois Fitzgerald of Ainsworth won first prize $25 for singing and guitar, the Keota male quartet took second prize $1, and Betty and George Colthurst of Ainsworth earned third prize $5 for vocal and whistling numbers.
A gust toppled the revival tent on the former Lincoln school grounds on South Iowa Avenue yesterday afternoon. Services will move indoors to the old school building Sunday while repairs are made to the torn tent. Rev. W J Stevens notes interior painting progress and that meetings with speakers will continue next week. Bob and Martha Stevens from Nevada Iowa completed their stint this week.
The Senate approved Francis Biddle's nomination to be attorney general without debate. He was to be sworn in this afternoon in the presence of President Roosevelt and Justice Robert Jackson.
Congressman Thomas E. Martin urged strong defense but opposed rushing the nation into war at a YMCA gathering. He cited 1.7 million army, pending mass production, and emphasized preparedness over entering a shooting war. He shared a Louisiana visit to Iowa soldiers and reaffirmed opposition to war until necessary.
The national railway mediation board ends direct mediation to avert a 1,260,000 worker strike and considers sending the dispute to President Roosevelt. Nineteen unions vote to strike for wage increases up to 41 percent, with 900,000 to walk out September 11, while the so called big five unions set a deadline soon.
Ames farmers will aid national defense by shifting food production to defense needs. State director George Heikens says curtail corn wheat tobacco and cotton while greatly increasing poultry, meat output.

At the Arthur Durst farm five and a half miles north debris littered yards. a hog house and corn crib were damaged. The Charles Marek farm six and a half miles north lost a straw stack. chimney and shutters were blown off and trees fell. At the John Knotek farm eight miles northeast a hoghouse was demolished. another building was struck. Ed Horn farm reported damage to a supply tank and barn door.

President Roosevelt announced that American naval forces are searching for the submarine that attacked the destroyer Greer multiple times in daylight off the American coast. He said forces will eliminate the submarine if found and emphasized the danger of a blind torpedo strike.
Cedar Falls Iowa Gypsy woman about 30 took a $6 lesson from Perkins upholstery owner who said the thief left with his wallet containing $6 after watching him work. He noted he had given his wife $5 minutes earlier.
The Municipal band will be entertained this evening by Director Milo Sorden at a wiener roast in Sunset park. Milo Sorden was re elected band director. Milo Steele Jr is president Harold Kerr vice president James Birney secretary Lester Mack treasurer. New board: Everett K Barham Tom Gray Stewart Bell John Yousling Max Lee. Merle Turnipseed named drum major replacing John Jackson who now serves as first sergeant with the 133rd Infantry band at Camp Claiborne La. Turnipseed formerly baton twirler for the high school band. On Sept 17 the band travels to Des Moines for the I O O F national convention parade.
