Gabriel Brucchini, 21, of Sioux City and Edward Mulkins, 20, of Waterloo are jailed on robbery charges after being seized in Dubuque within hours of the Haas drug store holdup in Dubuque that netted 46.33. Police reported two automatic pistols and cash found on the suspects.
Washington business leaders and the Chamber of Commerce plan a big evening this Thursday for the fall store opening and the amateur contest finals. The Washington high school band will march at eight, then perform a twenty minute park concert before eight thirty’s contest. Eight finalists include Morrison sisters and several outside entries with prizes totaling eighty dollars plus final cash awards of 265 for first, 10 for second and 5 for third.
David McCullough four month old son of Mr and Mrs Hinton McCullough perished in a Osceola home fire that gutted the house as parents nearby fought to reach the child. A four year old sibling was stopped from entering and escaping unharmed. The blaze is believed to have started from a kitchen stove.
Cedar Rapids police hunt a hitchhiker who called himself Joe Swan in a theft case involving $700 in travelers checks from Al Setter. Setter picked up the man near Ottumwa, drove him to Cedar Rapids, and later found a forged check cashed in his name. Detectives identify one check as forged.
An expected 900 school teachers from Polk Madison Story and Dallas counties will attend a teachers institute in West Des Moines on September 17. Speakers include Maude McBroom of the State University of Iowa, T W Smith of the University of Chicago, Jane Gardner Smith of Minneapolis schools, and Wayland Osborn of Central College. Demonstrations cover home economics library science physical education mathematics science social science English and journalism.
A grape phyllophagous insect new to Iowa has increased and threatens corn on ground that grew legumes last year. Extension entomologist Harold Gunderson advises farmers to plow ahead of Sept 15 and cultivate to frost to starve grubs and allow safe corn planting next spring.
Ronald Gilson eight year old son of Mr and Mrs Merlyn Gibson of Kinross was accidentally hanged by a cord used to tie a yard gate shut at the Calvin Gibson home three miles south of Kinross Neighbors were filling a silo when the body was found by Vernon Marner
Evangelist Rev. J. F. Rodeffer of St. Louis Missouri leads revival meetings at the Church of the Nazarene. Opening message titled The Preparation for an Old Fashioned Revival, with Miss Dorothy Rodeffer in charge of music. Services run through September 14 and attendees are invited by Pastor Jay S. Phipps.
After ten weeks of brutal fighting on a vast Eastern Front 10,000,000 Russian and German soldiers face a bitter winter campaign. Both sides report heavy losses but retain reserves with a 1800 mile front from the Arctic to the Black Sea. Russian claims and German counters sketch a war of endurance into spring.
Des Moines reports the Iowa state parole board announced the parole of 22 convicts. Fourteen from the state reformatory and eight from the state prison were freed. Floyd Tucker aged 29 from Washington county and Elmer Clapton aged 29 from Washington county were paroled for forgery with multi-month sentences.
In Hempstead New York three children Georgene Kramer six Casper Cuccio five and Pauline Cuccio seven were killed when an army plane crashed exploded and showered flaming gasoline as they played near their homes. The pilot Second Lt Roy W Scott baled out at 300 feet and landed in a tree near the wreckage. Eight other children were sprayed with oil but escaped harm.
The janitor at Tucker Chevrolet burned old paper and trash in the furnace basement yesterday afternoon. Fire spread to nearby waste but was quickly extinguished by the fire department with minimal smoke. Claude Tucker stated no damage occurred to the building or its contents.
William Bates begins work this week as manual training instructor at the junior high and as a member of the high school coaching staff. He succeeds Orval Mecklenberg at the junior high and Kenneth Kimberlin on the coaching staff, who resigned to lead athletics in Dubuque public schools. Bates previously taught in Milford Iowa for five years as industrial arts instructor and coached successful teams. He is a Buena Vista College graduate at Storm Lake and holds a master's from Colorado State Teachers College.
Seventeen southeastern Iowa counties attended a two day district Farm Bureau meeting in Washington with morning, afternoon and evening sessions on Tuesday and morning and afternoon on Wednesday. H E Cook oversaw the event assisted by O W Beeler and Harry Bryson. discussions covered plans for annual meetings and preparations for 1942 membership campaigns in Poweshiek Johnson Cedar Clinton Scott Muscatine Louisa Washington Keokuk Wapello Jefferson Henry Des Moines Lee Van Buren Davis.
A new insect named grape colaspis has appeared in Washington county over two years and now damages corn roots especially in Cedar township. The grub attacks young corn roots, then becomes a beetle feeding on legumes in June and July. No spring control exists, but fall plowing of cover crops like alfalfa red clover or soybeans may help.
The Senate quickly accepted a new surtax plan and began debate on an $8.68 billion tax bill. Senator Arthur Vandenberg of Michigan filed a minority report opposing the measure, warning against becoming an unlimited treasury for those who fight the axis. He printed his stance in the record to avoid a lengthy speech.
New York September 3 The World Series will open at Yankee stadium in New York on Wednesday October 1. Commissioner Landis announced after a meeting with club representatives.
White House Secretary Stephen Early denied that Premier Konoye invited President Roosevelt to a high seas conference. He said no invitation exists and the only water trip planned is a cruise from Annapolis on the Chesapeake Bay and the Potomac River.
Rain yesterday and last night totaled .70 inch with .62 inch falling yesterday forenoon and the remainder later. Today the temperature rose to 90 degrees by 1 PM after a high of 71 yesterday and 67 last night.
Farmers are urged to finish plowing by mid September and cultivate the soil until frost to starve corn grubs. The practice supports safe replanting on the same ground next season. Areas with heavy pest infestations should especially follow these measures.

Steel, airplanes, textiles, oil, and other sectors set new records as construction values neared 4.5 billion dollars this year.

The Atlantic toll from U boats and raids has fallen as U S patrols and better escorting ships assist convoys. Losses include Hood and Bismarck in dramatic battles, with heavy blows to Admiral Cunningham’s force in Crete.
The United States sues retired gang chief Al Capone and 14 associates for about 250000 in taxes and penalties on beer seized from their illicit rackets during Prohibition. U S Attorney Woll says the group bets on forgetfulness as the statute of limitations nears expiration in 10 days as of Sept. 3. The government seeks prompt settlement before the limit passes.

Red Army advances push through Leningrad and central front sectors led by Marshal Voroshilov amid heavy fighting and large enemy losses. British air raids on Berlin ignite large fires marking two years since Britain’s war declaration.
A Riverside wreck story misnamed deputy Walt Kiesey as his brother Stan Kiesey in early reporting. The error, corrected after publication, followed Kiesey’s ongoing efficient service in his deputy role.
Washington Odd Fellows travel to Des Moines September 14 to 19 for the sovereign grand lodge meeting. The Washington lodge sponsors a Municipal band for the parade and events, with Lynn J. Irwin of Des Moines to be installed as grand sire. Des Moines sessions expect several thousand attendees and over 70 drill teams.
