Red Guard youths vow combat training for war against U.S. in Vietnam

Chinese Red Guard militants call themselves grave diggers of the old world and pledge to train for a fight to the end against Americans in Vietnam and against traitorous Soviet leaders. Kiwanis Travelogue Series Plans At Local High School

The Washington Kiwanis Club plans a six part Travelogue series at the high school with color films narrated by the photographers. Season tickets will be $5 for adults and $2.50 for others, with six Monday night shows starting October 24. Tickets are limited to seat availability and single show tickets will be sold at the door when the program begins.

United Nations seeks Thant extension amid U.S. push

A U.S. driven campaign to persuade U Thant to stay beyond his term grows ahead of the September General Assembly. Officials including Arthur Goldberg urge the secretary general to remain, while Britain France and the Soviet Union await guidance. Thant is in seclusion and has not yet responded to the draft move.

Body of Tracy Proctor Found in Ottumwa Park Lake

In Ottumwa Iowa the body of five year old Tracy Proctor who was mentally retarded and unable to speak was recovered from a five acre swimming area in Greater Ottumwa Park after an all night search by hundreds of volunteers. She had been missing since 4 p.m. Thursday after going to the park with two sisters.

Hughes calls for highway crackdown over Labor Day

Gov Harold E Hughes declared a state of emergency on Iowa streets and highways to reduce traffic fatalities during Labor Day weekend. He ordered a large enforcement program with 750+ officers and 600+ vehicles, backed by National Guard and various state agencies, using special badges and Auxiliary Highway Patrol plates. Motorists were urged to drive with headlights on from noon today through Tuesday.

Archaeologists Unearth Indian Relics Near Red Rock Lake

Iowa State University team excavates four major sites plus a burial mound two miles southeast of Avon Lake in Des Moines Valley ahead of Red Rock Dam flooding. Finds include Oneota and Woodland artifacts, storage pits, skeletons, copper beads, charred corn and a mysterious row of six inch diameter post holes separating a domestic area from a cemetery.

Bertrode urges use of planes to curb Labor Day traffic

Republican attorney general candidate Joseph G Bertrode urged Gov Hughes to deploy Iowa National Guard aviation units to back the highway patrol. He said over 20 fixed wing and helicopter aircraft could spot traffic violators and report them to ground patrols to enforce speed laws.

Iowa allocates 6 million for area vocational schools

The State Board of Public Instruction and the State Advisory Committee on Community Colleges approved a six million dollar plan for area vocational schools in seven districts. Council Bluffs receives 1.25 million, Waterloo 1.1 million, Cedar Rapids 1 million, with Creston Fort Dodge Sheldon and others receiving rest. Regulations require air conditioning and restrict state funds for athletic facilities.

Change of venue eyed in Speck murder trial

Defense lawyer Gerald W Getty says Richard Speck could not get a fair trial in Chicago and may seek a venue change. After a court hearing Judge Paschen granted defense motions, with Getty proposing joint mental expert review before trial. Speck, 24, faces eight-charge murder case after nurses slain last July on Chicago's south side.
