A utility pole top burned off near Sunset Park caused a power outage for about a dozen Iowa Southern Utilities customers early today. ISU crews restored power after about one hour and forty minutes.
In Taiwan, Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek marked his 85th birthday with widespread public celebration. Police estimated about 50,000 visitors filled the birthday hall at the presidential building, while hundreds of thousands attended halls across public spaces despite his request for restraint.
Israeli troops manned frontier positions after air raids near Damascus and a Syrian armored headquarter in the north. The attacks marked the heaviest fighting in 27 months of the cease-fire. Damascus said 50 killed and 70 wounded. An Arab guerrilla bombing at Tel Aviv injured three on the building’s third floor.

Neu, a 39 year old attorney and Republican lieutenant governor candidate, has served in the Iowa Senate since 1967.
A Doane Agricultural Service poll of 2 735 farmers across 12 Midwest states as of Oct 1 10 found 66 percent favoring Nixon 17 6 for McGovern 12 8 undecided and 3 6 for other candidates The survey also shows broad approval for the flexible set aside acreage program and little impact from wheat sale criticism to Russia.
A bus carrying thirty eight American pilgrims retracing Paul’s steps crashed on the main highway to ancient Corinth. Four women died at once and a fifth later in hospital. Twenty two seriously injured remained in Corinth hospital while eight more were treated in Athens area hospitals. three escaped unharmed.
The Washington County Grand Jury began investigating reports of unauthorized fund use and false bank balance certifications tied to Kalona City and Mid Prairie Community School District. Audits disclosed false entries, with a February 1972 $80,000 withdrawal. The probe aims to determine facts and applicable Iowa law violations.
