Relatives found 1500 dollars tucked in coffee cans and an attic box in the late Mrs Hil da Benson's residence. Since she had drawn state old age assistance for three years, part of the money will repay the assistance to the state and the rest goes to her estate.
St. Luke hospital attendants reported two unusual cases over the weekend. Doctors removed a wedged burr from the throat of Lloyd Jensen, 19, of Center Point, and parts of a toy whistle from the esophagus of a 9 year old boy, John Oltmaoy, of Marlette.
Ben F. Trimble and his son Orvel F. Trimble, both with prior records, were sentenced to one year in Fort Madison prison after pleading guilty to assault with intent to commit great bodily injury. They were arrested following a free for all fight that injured Walter Trimble and George Pettit in Cascade.
Cedar Rapids police summon five grocery store proprietors to city court to justify allowing students to spend lunch money on punchboards. Detectives seized 10 boards from five stores in high school neighborhoods after complaints from parents and teachers.
Ottumwa plans to delay all four civic concerts due to European war disruptions. Miss Voldi Mildner, a Viennese pianist, will perform in February, and Marian Anderson is scheduled for an April concert as the revised lineup.
Adan L. Connelly, 45, received a five year term and a $1000 fine for an embezzlement of $188,125 at an Ottumwa bank. She is jailed in Council Bluffs, with temporary transfer to Wapello County Jail planned before officials reversed course and ordered Council Bluffs custody.
Harold Tachantz a Wayland High School sophomore and athlete died at Henry County Hospital Mount Pleasant after an appendectomy last Wednesday. He appeared well this morning but died from a blood clot about 9 Se. He was born October 1 1922 in Wayland and survived by his parents and sister Evelyn. Funeral arrangements by Stacy funeral home pending.
Coroner's jury probes the death of Carl Bivens a 38 year old Missouri flying instructor missing since a takeoff with 28 year old Ernest Pletch. Police say Pletch confessed to killing Bivens in flight. Bivens body found in a field near Cherry Box Missouri. Pletch held in Indianapolis after Bloomington arrest.
Washington Oct 31 The administration won the opening engagement in the house neutrality fight as the chamber approved a rule to send the measure to conference with the senate. The vote to close debate stood 237 to 177 supporting the move, signaling early strength but not a final decision or guarantee of success.
Mt. Pleasant and Washington Rotaries met last night in Crawfordsville with about twenty five local business leaders. The program included music, talks, and a motion picture of the Iowa South Dakota football game.
The president accepts an invitation to sponsor the Y M C A Fiftieth Anniversary celebration. He hopes the event inspires broader youth work and international friendship. A collision at the Temple corner on No 92 six miles west of town injured three men in two cars. Byers of Lake Park suffered a broken collar bone and head bruise. Ed Conrad of Keota and Frank Marsh of Keota were also hurt though not seriously. The Conrad car, a 1940 model, was badly wrecked and may not be used again.
President Roosevelt designated November 28 as Thanksgiving Day urging national gratitude for peace amid world turmoil. The proclamation sets the holiday on the third Thursday of November, a change from the former last Thursday.

Ray Whetstine twenty four of Wellman is jailed in Washington county awaiting a hear ing on larceny of a motor vehicle charge.
