Mrs Laura Lt Dack dining in a downtown store was robbed of 170 in cash and 175 worth of jewelry from her pocketbook left on the floor. The loss included a 100 watch 75 pearls and a bank lock box key. Police found no witnesses to the robbery.
More than one hundred kindergarten and first grade pupils rode the branch line train with teachers aboard. The nine mile trip lasted 45 minutes at about 20 miles an hour with a 15 minute stop at Hamlin for switching.
Des Moines D C Rowe a Negro dancer pleaded guilty to parking in a restricted zone. Municipal Judge Charles Cooter fined him two dollars but invited him to dance. Rowe performed a quick dance before the bench and the judge suspended the fine.
Emmetsburg reports the death of 17 year old mallard resident T Lloyd Hares after a hunting accident on the Adrian Logan farm. The youth died at Palo Alto hospital from a gunshot injury suffered while rabbits were being hunted. His twin Lyle and Darius Loxson, 17, were with him when the 12 gauge shotgun discharged injuring their father nearby. He was the son of Mrs. Fa Hagerman of Havelock.
In Des Moines Stuart Chase warned that Germany's war effort relies on fuel. He said Germany needs 20 million tons yearly but may have only 6 million plus any in storage. He spoke at Drake University as the first lecture in a series.
Veterans of Foreign Wars urge Americans to wear Buddy Poppies on the Saturday before Armistice Day. This year non disabled exservice men, not patients, will make the flowers offering temporary work. Poppies go on sale in Washington on November 4 with local volunteers leading the effort.
Mr and Mrs A L Nelson and son Philip 13 move from Emporia Kansas to Washington. Nelson is territory representative for Allis Chalmers serving dealers in three counties. They live at 825 South 4th Avenue. Philip is a high school freshman with an accordion hobby.
Washington Lodge No. 26 hosts on November 14 at eight o'clock as Homer A. Benjamin of Des Moines visits as Grand Master of Iowa. Realft Ottesen of Davenport, past grand master, will speak along with the grand master. Local Masons and visiting members are invited.
In Glendale California on November 1 police and firemen used tear gas to break up a riot of about 2000 celebrating Hallowe'en. Roughly 75 elementary age boys were jailed as cells overflowed while others toppled signs damaged mail boxes and overturned cars amid a barrage of overripe tomatoes.
Osage Iowa November 1 Joe Novak 55 vowed to nab Halloween pranksters who would damage his truck farm. He checked his gun found it workable then during reholstering it fired striking him in the heart and killing him according to the news dispatch.
At a special meeting the Washington county Republican central committee named Theodore F. Baley as county Republican chairman to succeed Leslie M. Eicher who resigned after Governor Wilson appointed him to the state highway commission. The term runs to July after the June primary, with a campaign organization to follow for the November election.

John Coulter directs a well rounded plan with basketball volleyball handball and badminton for older boys 14 years up. The game room provides fellowship and reading with magazines for participants.

The Behind-the-Pall-Club presented a membership to a member recently in an automobile accident and Dave Elder received a cake for good luck.
The 1939 World of Tomorrow World’s Fair closed at two this morning ending the season in gloom. It posted a net deficit of 23,440,909 dollars and plans to reopen on May 6 next year despite a rainy closing day.
Lena M Shettler files suit for divorce from Charles M Shettler. Petition seeks decree of divorce, all household furniture, and costs. Couple married in Peoria Illinois on December 1 1934 and separated October 21 1939. Lawyer L J Kehoe represents the petitioner.

Howard Dillard comes to Washington as Manager of the meat department at the Big Giant market. The Dillards have lived in Oskaloosa and he has fourteen years in the meat business. They will move soon with their daughter Janice Lee, 20 months old. Dillard enjoys fishing and belongs to the Fagles lodge.
Rep John W Mccormack of Massachusetts urged recalling the U S ambassador to Russia charging that Molotovs opposition to repeal of the arms embargo violates international law House members applauded his claim that the embargo helps communist Russia and Nazi Germany A vote against repeal would aid them him declared.
Ray Whetstine pleaded guilty before Justice of the Peace J E Bovee to larceny of a motor vehicle and was bound over to district court on $1000 bond. He was arrested Monday in Kinross after taking a car stolen from Dr J Fry in Kalona. Otto Ossman also pled guilty to petty larceny and received 30 days in Washington county jail after admitting theft of tools from a Wellman resident.
WAYLAND Nov 1 Paul Widmer 29 died at 8 o'clock yesterday morning at his home northeast of Noble after years of glandular illness. Funeral 2 p.m. tomorrow at Eicher church, Rev Delbert Welty officiating. Burial in Eicher cemetery. Survived by wife Cora Graber daughter Joyce age one, his parents, a brother Jake, sister Rosalie, and two infant children. Burial by Boller and Zelir funeral home. Also Harold Tschantz funeral tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Church of God Green Mound, burial Green Mound cemetery. He died yesterday at Henry County hospital from a blood clot after an appendectomy. Body at Wayland high school auditorium 12:15–1 p.m. for short service. He was a sophomore at Wayland High School active in sports and extra curriculars, member of Church of God Green Mound. Alvin Roberts a 37 year old Muscatine county farmer won the 1939 Iowa corn husking championship on the John Jenks farm near Fairfield. He posted 2439.7 pounds in the 10 minute husking period to beat George Steffens of Wiota by 50 pounds and will represent Iowa at the national contest near Lawrence.
Washington police chief Jay Brown announced a limited Hallowe'en damage survey found few incidents last night and the night before. Some property was displaced including several outhouses on town outskirts, with a large gang of 37 boys targeting one structure despite owner precautions to keep it upright. Police officers on duty may have reduced mischief.
Governors in 23 states backed President Hoosewelt’s Nov 28 date while 28 states favored the traditional last Thursday. Texas and Colorado plan to observe both days. the split reflects a nationwide dispute over Thanksgiving timing.
