Campaign chairman Paul V. Shearer announced this year’s drive exceeded the goal of 23090 with receipts at noon totaling 28131.69. The effort opened October 28 and supported eleven organizations, with volunteers across wards, blocks and businesses aiding the drive.
Mrs Margaret Witting of Wellman chosen by Iowa Children s Home Society as service chairman for Washington County announced by William R Hassett of Des Moines president of the Child Welfare Society The Iowa Children s Home Society founded in 1888 serves every county for adoptive or foster placements and cared for more than 500 children last year in Iowa.
The Y's Men club directs all Washington bicycle owners to bring clean bikes to the southeast corner of Central Park between 9 and 10 a.m. Saturday for complimentary night reflector installation.

The anniversary program at the United Presbyterian Home in Washington reported over $20,000 added to the Home funds in the past year. Dr. John E. Simpson presided at the cornerstone laying for Hebron Hall with speakers from Illinois and Iowa synods, and music by the Washington high school band. Two cottage sites were marked Colthurst Memorial and a Missionary women’s group project, with gifts totaling $2,816.15 already committed toward the latter.
Voters are reminded of the three legal ballot methods in Iowa: straight ticket with a cross, split ticket by marking party and individual candidates, or voting for all candidates in a party with a cross at the top and for others with X marks. Write‑in votes are allowed in blank spaces, but require a cross by the candidate. Ballots may be spoiled for marks other than X, identifiable marks, signatures, mutilation, or erasures. Assistance is available for English‑language or physically unable voters by two people of different parties.
The United Nations Security Council postponed decisive action on possible sanctions against Israel until after the U S presidential election. A five nation Paris subcommittee will seek a compromise on Anglo Chinese proposals over Beersheba and territory taken from Egypt. The United States signaled support but Truman's intervention delayed formal moves. Other notes include Soviet west tensions and U S S defense in Germany as a new German state forms.
Friends report the death of Robert Schreiber at his Fall Village home. He died Monday October 25 after a three year heart ailment. He is survived by his wife Virginia Scranton Schreiber of Washington and two sons.
