A south side four story building burned in early morning, four people killed and eight injured. Investigators check 50 apartments for other victims while a second south side blaze drove residents to the streets. An 11 year old boy heroically jumped from a fourth floor window to escape.
Iowa Supreme Court refused to allow Polk County Attorney Carroll Switzer to appeal a district court ruling removing two counts in the ouster suit against suspended safety commissioner Myron J. Bennett. The court also denied Horace Havner’s bid to intervene, while Bennett’s lawyer argued no private interest existed. The case, before Judge G. K. Thompson in Cedar Rapids, resumes next Thursday.
Gillette, Democratic candidate for U S senator, urged federal aid for education with strong safeguards to keep local supervision intact. She died at noon Friday October 29 funeral services will be held at Keosauqua Monday afternoon at two o'clock her former home was in Keosauqua she had been bedfast for several months.

Alfred S Borders a former Crawfordsville resident dies at Buffalo. Funeral Sunday at two in the Methodist church Crawfordsville burial in the local cemetery. He was born October 28 ise in Kentucky and married Clara Young in Burlington on August 27 1926. Survived by four daughters and four sons, his parents two sisters and two brothers. He worked for Dewey cement Co. at Buffalo and farmed in Yarmouth and Wapello areas.
John L. Lewis accused President Truman of pressuring AFL leader William Green to reject Lewis proposed use of Marshal Plan leverage to curb French coal strikes. Green denied backing the plan while signaling sympathy in Minneapolis. Lewis blasted Green for opposing hunger among French miners and warned of internal pressure in Washington.
