Rex R E Blott a 26 year old Jehovahs Witness student from Fort Madison was sentenced by Federal Judge Charles A Dewey to 12 months in prison for refusing to comply with the draft. He appeared with his blond wife married last May and testified he valued the hereafter over service to the country.
World renowned pianist Percy Grainger appears in Washington on Wednesday December 3 as part of the Washington Concert League winter series. His career spans Europe, Australia, and America with praise from Grieg and acclaim as a leading modern pianist.

Hartley Iowa prepares for the 20th annual corn husking tournament on the William Trimer farm one mile north of Hartley in O'Brien county. Defending champion Marion Link and runner up Tival Carlson head a 15 man field with links to Story and Polk counties. They previously met three times last year with Link winning the central district and state contests and finishing second nationally while Carlson placed third nationally.
Street Commissioner A E Palmer announced that the ongoing street resurfacing project begun a few weeks ago will be completed today for the year. About seven miles were planned, with over half completed despite wet weather, using crushed rock and asphalt, blotting with rocks or sand.

Francis Thames, an Oklahoman working in the county, appeared before Judge Frank Bechly in Montezuma Sigourney this morning and was fined 300 dollars and costs after pleading guilty to operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. If unable to pay, the fine will be served in Washington county jail. Thames is the second defendant from Sheriff H M Putnam and County Attorney John C Owen to receive sentence this week. Earl M Hawkins of Houstontown Pennsylvania received a similar sentence earlier.
A special Shriners rail car from Davenport and southeastern Iowa arrives in Washington Thursday at 10 25 am for members to board for the Kansas City meet. Hal Reister of Washington will join the Kaaba temple band for the trip and other Shrine members may join locally. The train returns Sunday about 5 30 pm. Shriners from Iowa Nebraska Missouri Kansas and Oklahoma participate in the ceremonial, following a Tulsa previous year event for five states.
A new general metal course for out of school youth starts Nov 10 at the county yard. The program, using four acetylene welders two forges three lathes anvils and related gear, aims to teach welding and lathe work with 15 hours weekly for 17 to 24 year olds. If enrollments are low the class may expand to include 18 and up with five nights a week six hours nightly. Interested individuals should contact W A Erbe or BE A Ralston.
Social Security matters report a communication from Buel A. Williamson of the federal security agency at Ottumwa stating that Mr. Gardner will be in Washington at the post office on Thursday October 30 to handle matters.
