Des Moines Iowa. Comptroller C Fred Porter says the legislative interim committee approved a 2505 allocation for new kitchen and laboratory equipment at the Oakdale state sanatorium. Funds cover kitchen gear includes a dish washing machine work tables and cabinets.
In Des Moines Iowa the 500th highway death of 1941 was Claude Purvis 41 of Perry. He died when his 13 year old car was struck by a Milwaukee train at Grimes after failing to stop at a grade crossing and turning onto the tracks to outrun the locomotive.
A jury has been impaneled for the trial of Bryan E. Evans former Mahaska county auditor on embezzlement charges. Testimony to begin today with over 25 witnesses subpoenaed for the state. A $4 000 shortage was reported last May. Paul Stutzman Evans deputy is also indicted and will be tried later in this term.
Union officials said the Bakers Workers Union No. 34 will continue a strike at seven Des Moines bakeries to secure a wage adjustment ahead of contract expiration next May. Bakery Drivers Union No. 356 did not join the strike.
Des Moines Lt. Col. Robert S. Shane tells the sixth district American Legion auxiliary conference that proper nutrition is a public health and wartime priority. He cites malnutrition as causing many selectee rejections and urges nutrition to be a universal concern, not only for the army. About 300 auxiliary members heard him.
In Creston, district court sessions slated for early week were postponed due to loss of court records and briefs from multiple law offices burned in a Sunday blaze that caused about 200000 dollars in damage. Only four of 17 tenants from five destroyed buildings found new locations.
Des Moines reports the state appeal board endorsed compromises for 18 claims the state held against as many cities and school districts over financial affairs. Audits from 1954 to 1958 were settled under a new law, after protests from affected municipalities and schools. A special assistant attorney general negotiated the deals, appointed by the board.
Nortonville Kentucky Oct 28 Rescue squads pumped deadly gases from the Daniel Boone mine and recovered the bodies of 15 explosion victims. The crews worked in shifts of 21 men to repair the ventilating system and remove gas from the airshaft.
At a Washington Concert League meeting plans were made to start ticket sales for a new season. The membership drive begins Monday with Mrs. A B Baldrige directing canvass in the county. First program December 8 featured pianist Percy Grainger. Januaryuk by the Fine Arts string quartet. Tickets priced as last year. three numbers $2.50, two for $4, students at schools $1 plus tax.
Three thousand one hundred forty five school children from 99 schools in Washington county belong to the Junior Red Cross, the largest enrollment to date. Townships Brighton Cedar Clay Crawford Franklin Marion Oregon Washington report 100 percent junior membership, with many schools fully enrolled. Teachers are urged to ensure memberships are recorded by the upcoming Saturday at the courthouse or at Mrs. Fred Reid's address, 212 South Marion, for Clara Faulkner.

Captain Welter G. Conner reports Brigadier General Paine commended members of the 2nd squadron 113th Cavalry scout car platoon for outstanding performance during Army vs Army maneuvers in Louisiana. The unit, drawn from Troops D C and EK, is under Lt. Harold T Caldwell and Lt. Roger Ficher serves as umpire, with many named personnel listed and plans to return by December.
Axis forces facing the Red army in mudbound fighting near Moscow and in the Donets basin showed little progress. Soviet reports cite stiff resistance as about 2,000,000 Russians and 15,000 tanks oppose the enemy drive into industrial Ukraine with the Rostov area believed to remain 10 to 15 miles from the spearhead.
Four Washington county registrants left yesterday afternoon for Fort Des Moines for induction into the army. The board faces a call to send three more men to the army on November 12 and notes that only that call has been received for November. Francis Schnoebelen Riverside and Leslie Dunlap attended a district conference of selective service officials at Iowa City. Colonels Lancaster Fulton and Shaw and Major Bennett were present from Des Moines. Walter Jackson Kalona a first registrant inducted last November has been released as one of those over 28 years of age. He remains the only Washington county inductee so far released.
Leo Hoover will take possession of the Sharpstore store and funeral home in Hopkinton Delaware county Iowa on November 1. The Hoovers, residents for fifteen years, will move from their present home around the twelfth of next month. Nan, their daughter, is a high school junior and Tom attends Lincoln school. Nan and Tom will be missed in local social, church and school circles. Leo Hoover has been linked with Sherman's funeral home since Roger Sherman started it twelve years ago.
Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at L A Jones funeral home with Dr R Keaggy of the Methodist church in charge. Pallbearers included Bert Yard C B Yard Adam Wagner Dr L R Eller George Breitenbach and Ray Whitehead. Burial followed at Elm Grove cemetery.

The official thermometer fell to 22 degrees, ten below freezing, marking the first killing frost of the season. The frost was past due but considered beneficial and normal for this time of year as the sun returns on a bright fall day.

Perfect weather washed over the five district husking contests as 12 contestants to reach the state meet Oct 30 competed on the George Den by farm near Hedrick. About 1000 spectators watched as tractors lined the muddy fields after a frost improved conditions overnight.
Two women captured following a wild downtown street ride in a stolen automobile are detained by Davenport police. The incident occurred in the city as officers pursued the vehicle through downtown.

Earl M. Hawkins of Houston town Pa. was fined 300 dollars and costs by Judge Frank Bechly in district court at Sigourney after pleading guilty to operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. Hawkins was arraigned on information by County Attorney John C. Owen after a Washington street arrest Sunday night and is jailed while relatives raise funds.
The Red Cross work room at City Hall invites newcomers who moved here in the last 12 months and women with the pipeline company to sew. Use the west door. The room is open Tuesday to Friday from 1 to 5 p.m. Thursday afternoon session noted.
