A blaze in Creston guts five buildings and damages a sixth in the business section, causing about 200000 dollars in losses. Fire Chief Pat Hannan calls it the town's worst fire, started by an unknown ignition in the Kaneth paint store basement after Mrs. Kaneth smelled smoke.
A district court jury acquitted Herbert C. Pollard in the 1927 slaying of Deputy Sheriff Clint McConnell of Decatur County. Pollard and Sam T. Petty had been charged with bootlegging and the deputy was killed on a country road near Grand River as he tried to arrest them. Petty has since died.
Blencoe residents spent the year swatting box elder bugs which are more numerous than last summer. The N C Gray family nearly missed baths as an electrician found one bug had crawled into an enter switch and stopped the electric water pump.
Larry Newton three year old son of Mr and Mrs EE Donahue of Newton suburb died of a tetanus infection in Skiff hospital. He lost two fingers and a thumb from his left hand after his hand was caught in a power meat grinder operated by his parents. He is survived by his parents three older brothers and a sister.
About 121 Iowans from 65 encampments will be inducted into the U S Navy at 4 50 pm today on the statehouse grounds. Co W L Padgett will provide seven army trucks to transport recruits from the navy recruiting station to the ceremony. The Sioux City group comprises 22 men, the largest contingent.
Leon Beatty American Legion post reports 87 members today, surpassing its 85 member quota for the new year. Commander S. W. Easter says the figure will grow, with district conference set for Burlington Municipal auditorium featuring a 2:39 business session and a 6:30 banquet. Washington delegation expected and 25 members asked to wear Lesson uniforms.

Weather turned cool and blustery this morning recalling Armistice day storm with a freeze and strong wind. Temperatures ranged from 60 to 87 last night with a cool day ahead and a possible chilly night. Rain totaled about a half inch over the last two days with .24 and .25 inches reported.
Dr. Ruth Church announces a smallpox and diphtheria immunization program in city elementary schools on November 3 and 5. Eileen Jeffrey and local physicians will administer with materials at family physicians’ offices. sessions at St James Stewart and Lincoln schools.

Des Moines reports a steel shortage for Iowa automobile license plates. James Allen, secretary of the motor vehicle registration department, said plates were not allotted as plans required, jeopardizing 1943 plates. Harry Shropshire noted a B-1 priority rating secured, but only one company may supply the 500 tons needed.
Relatives wait at two Clanton parlors as police identify victims of a Montgomery to Birmingham bus wreck where 15 people burned to death and seven were seriously injured. Authorities later confirmed 15 fatalities and found no other bodies. driver Patrick Alton claimed 27 aboard before dying, though company checks showed 22.
New York October 27 Frances Perkins secretary of labor warned that rebuilding after the war will focus on health nutrition and housing. She described the challenge as gigantic and requiring ingenuity and the efforts of people worldwide at the League of Nations international labor organization conference.

Tomorrow morning more than fifty Washington men begin a drive to raise 5650 for the YMCA’s coming year. The campaign includes a 730 breakfast, a pep meeting, and pledges signed by new and renewing members. Since 1925 the local YMCA has served as a community center, supported by memberships and donations from 46 longtime members and others.
The Washington YMCA reports 3496 distinct users in the past year with many making repeated visits while others used incidental services. The building and its programs touched numerous lives directly and influenced many more through indirect contacts.
A. D. Lewis and Sidney Hillman figure in a Senate probe into the defense program. Lewis accuses Hillman of discriminating against workers not in the A F of Building Trades union while testifying before a special committee.
Washington county treasurer lists 11 new licenses including cars trucks and two trailers issued in the past week. Current year car total 5 895 with 199 more than last year as of this date, trucks total 1 011 up from 77 last year. Farl Melvin Hawkins of Hous tontown Pa was to be taken to Sigourney for ar raignment before Judge Bechly in district court after admitting guilt to operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. He had been held to the district court with bonds set at $1000 following a Justice of the Peace hearing. The arrest followed a collision with attorney T A Michels near Michels office on North Marion avenue, with damages estimated at $25.
Crawfordsville widow Mrs J Cannon died after a seven week illness. Funeral services are set for two oclock tomorrow at the Crawfordsville United Presbyterian Church with Rev R M McCraecken and Rev George Kerr officiating. Interment by L A Jones of Washington. Survived by husband four daughters a sister a brother sixteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren. She and her husband celebrated their golden anniversary eight weeks ago. born August 1866 near Ainsworth she married John Chariton Cannon September 1 1891. She was active in church groups and the Wyman Community club.
West Chester hosts a child health conference on Thursday October 36 in the town school building. Dr C W McLaughtin of Washington leads the immunization program in the morning and Dr Ruth K Church county health unit director oversees the day in the building.
