Nels Johnson, 62, died from an electrical shock in Hastings while using a self made device for neuritis. He lay on a wired tobacco can with a loose wire from a socket, a method his wife says gave him relief. Dr Edgar Christy noted a weak heart may have contributed to the fatal incident.
Frank Henry 55 a farmer near Cresco died at Mercy hospital six hours after a tractor accident in which he fell and was crushed beneath a corn trailer he was towing. He was turning from a field when he swerved to avoid an auto. Survived by his wife and six children.
About 25 000 people attended the dedication of a half million dollar municipal airport in Sioux City. The ceremony featured remarks by Smith W Pardum of Washington DC second assistant postmaster general and a brief talk by Capt. Eddie Rickenbacker to whom the field was dedicated. Mid Continent Airlines started daily service but strong winds canceled part of the air show and hindered speakers.
Three Audubon ministers called for tolerance toward Jehovah's Witness activities after a disturbance in which several Witnesses were beaten at Coon Rapids. Rev. O. E. Cooley, Rev. L. E. Akin, and Rev. Paul E. Parker urged congregations to avoid buying Witness literature while denouncing the creed and its attitude, noting they have studied the sect.
Norman D Hansen 19 of Cushing died when the car carrying five youths from a dance struck a bridge near Alta at about 6 AM. Verdeen Lindt 18 of Washta drove the car. Sindt 18 was cut and survived. Betty Brown 17 of Galva was treated for cuts. two other occupants were uninjured. Coroner John J Taylor of Buena Vista county ruled jugular injury fatal.
OELWEIN Iowa two amateur pilots died after a thrill ride plane spun and fell 200 feet to the ground near the city. The victims were Lester Folsom 24 an airport attendant and Dale Brickman names from Oren Ta both were unconscious at Mercy Hospital before dying Sunday afternoon. The biplane was an older model.
Adjutant General Charles H. Grahl said Iowa is prepared to assist with selective service and the induction of National Guard units into the regular army. Col. Robert L. Fulton reported that complete reports from all 120 Iowa draft boards have been received and that the state board will begin setting local board percentage quotas to guide future allocations.
In Crawfords ville Mayor R L Lytle sentences Gurney Curtis to ten days in county jail after pleading guilty to intoxication. He is described as an old offender picked up on the same charge previously. Lloyd McFarland of Ainsworth is arrested and charged with breach of the peace and malicious mischief after marking Grover Custers parked car with a pocket knife following a prior dispute. He is fined 25 dollars and costs. Training for many county men is noted. National draft numbers will be called tomorrow. questionnaires go out by week’s end.
The March of Time adds segments from Baptism of Fire to The Ramparts We Watch to warn Americans about Nazi aggression. UFA censorship blocked full use. Canada supplied the Nazi footage for a limited pre release. Critics note the Nazi material may inspire resistance rather than fear.
The Washington Y M C A will seek a $6,000 annual budget tomorrow with a breakfast at 7 20 am for about 40 volunteers to canvass the community. Quarles Davis will head the breakfast, served by Hi Y club boys, as the drive aims to fund pool heating and repairs. Stewart will lead the canvass, and Dr F W Eastwood will speak. Last year’s total was $5,500.
Funeral services for Charles M Lub Bickford 53 were held at 2 p m at Sherman s funeral home with Rev Carl W Klein officiating Burial followed at Woodlawn cemetery Pallbearers were Everette Burham Dale Atkins A E Palmer C A Neiswanger Dr S B Watson and John Pehler He died suddenly Saturday evening at the city hall fire station of a heart attack Born June 22 1887 in Washington he lived his life there and served in World War I in Company K France He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the local National Guard He is survived by brother Harold Washington and sister Mrs B J McKee Gary Indiana.
Judge James P. Gaffney of Marengo will address Washington residents at the courthouse Wednesday evening at eight. The event is hosted by the Democratic County Central Committee. Gaffney presides in Johnson and Iowa counties and previously ran as a Democratic candidate for Congress.

Rev. William M Nichol preached his final sermons at the United Presbyterian church and plans to leave Tuesday for Sterling Kansas to lead a new church. He reviewed three years of ministry and announced guest speakers for upcoming Sundays including Rev Ron Jamieson and Dr C A Owen with a Thankoffering address by Dr T C Stranze.
Mr and Mrs Peck Geneva and daughter Gretchen were guests of friends and relatives in Albla yesterday.
Wendell Willkie criticized Cordell Hull's foreign policy talk as an extraordinary demonstration of New Deal futility. He said the crisis can be solved only by defeating the third term candidate, while traveling to Louisville for an 8:30 CBS broadcast.
President Roosevelt began a major push for a third term in New Jersey and New York. A Newark crowd estimated at 54,000 greeted him as his campaign moves toward a Madison Square Garden speech aired on NBC networks at nine.
Chairman Richard McCleery said three Washington County registrants who filed Oct 16 have enlisted or will enlist without waiting for draft numbers. One enlisted this morning, two earlier. another registrant has joined for four full three year terms. The county list shows 2195 registrants. some Johnson County residents listed here may transfer. The bulletin from draft headquarters explains that mailing Questionnaires starts classification and that notices are posted daily. entries in the classification record serve as notice.
Washington Baptist Church selects Rev. C. G. Wright of Fort Dodge as interim pastor for three days a week while seeking a permanent minister. Wright plans to stay with rooms on East Madison Street and will adjust prayer meetings from Wednesday to Tuesday evenings during the interim period. He has preached for the church the past two Sundays amid the resignation of Rev. J. Fredmund.
Maynard Bower pleaded guilty to passing a false check for ten dollars and drew a thirty day sentence in the county jail. Mary Schauenberg admitted theft from Montgomery Ward, receiving a thirty day jail term though bonded for a larger, uncharged larceny amount.
Army officials told Governor Wilson that the federal government plans a bigger purchase in Decatur county for an encampment. The land will extend about two and a half miles west of the prior plot, requiring reconstruction of Highway 65. The governor said he would finalize draft appointments this week, including a state director.
Greece, backed by Britain, repels an Axis push and Britain occupies Crete amid naval actions. Italian and German offensives hit airports and harbors in Greece while 200000 Italian troops push from Albania. Turkey may aid Greece as Russia warns against expansion. Florence talks hint at daily campaign decisions by Hitler and Mussolini, as Italian demands for bases in Greece are rejected.
Rain fell forenoon today totaling a quarter of an inch marking the first in weeks. The two warmest days of the fall period reached 85 degrees Saturday and 91 degrees Sunday. Cooler weather is forecast for tomorrow.
Iowa’s weekend death toll reached eight with a plane crash near Oelwein killing two youths and multiple auto and truck crashes accounting for the remaining fatalities. The victims include Lester Folson 24 of Oelwejs Dale Brickman 20 of Oren Norman D Jansen 19 of Cushing Patricia Schroeder 10 of West Liberty Marian Braig 40 of Omaha Bert Maxwell 67 of Shenandoah Frank Henry 55 near Cresco and Nels Johnson 62 of Hastings.
A delegation from Washington will attend a Republican meeting at eight tonight in the Ainsworth school building. R W Dunlap, noted farm leader and former Ohio secretary of agriculture, will address the gathering. A large crowd of farmers is expected, with a brief music program before the address.
Funeral services will be held here this afternoon for Mrs. Florence Closson 28 of Waterloo who died at her home Friday of a heart ailment. She weighed 600 pounds. Her husband was killed in a train accident about three months ago. Her mother survives.
Marian Straig, 40, of Omaha Nebraska, was killed when she lost control on a curve Sunday morning. She died at a local hospital while en route to Hot Springs Arkansas with sister Agnes Braig. Another sister remained a patient at the hospital. The victim was employed as a doctor's office assistant.
