Ottumwa city council asks police to curb horn honking by motorists especially at night in downtown areas, aiming to reduce noise and improve street quiet. The move targets excessive vehicle horn use within the city.
Formal opening of Dickinson Emmet Kossuth rural electrification project offices follows a parade. The project has been energized and 500 patrons along 420 miles of transmission lines are experiencing slowed service.
A heavy semi truck carrying almost fifteen tons of steel piles collapsed a bridge near Barnes City as it crossed it. The driver, Stoward Cox of Virden Illinois, escaped unharmed and no injuries were reported.
John H. Brine resigns after ten years as president to become executive vice president and general manager of Oscar Heineman Corp in Chicago. He joins the board of Rollins. son Gordon Brine remains VP of sales at Rollins in Des Moines.
OTTUMWA The Iowa Order of Redmen filed suit in district court against F. B. Hudson sachem of the Eddyville Toma hawk tribe No. 140 and five officers at the time of their 1936 dissolution. The action seeks a full accounting of properties and alleged vote accounts.
The seven siblings of 18 month old Zetta Lee Caughron died in a Waterloo house fire on November 26 1938 were ordered placed in the Lutheran Orphans Home at Waverly by Judge G J Sager. The father serves a term in Fort Madison penitentiary for non support.
Iowa state government was invited to buy the Ford plant at Grand Ave on an installment plan. EB J Donahoe of Donahoe Investment Co said Ford Motor Co offered the Ford building and ground in exchange for the 80 acre Clive farm and 285000 dollars paid in six equal yearly installments. Donahoe transmitted the offer to the state executive council and the legislative interim committee for consideration.
Two men died of infantile paralysis in Des Moines hospitals raising Polk county’s death toll to eight since mid September and 14 cases under medical care. Health officials said no alarm, noting cold weather should curb spread. Harold Moeckley 37 of Arkeny and Charles Hammond 26 are named among the victims.
Dr. Nicholas R. Doman of Budapest spoke at Grinnell College on Hungary's historic role. He said Hungary endured Mongol Turk invasion and resisted German pressure, facing a double historical duty to fend off Germany east and Russia west, with hopes to regain Transylvania and other former Hungarian lands.
The Dies committee linked the American League for Peace and Democracy to communism and named Mordecai Ezekial director of the Agricultural Adjustment Administration and Edwin S. Smith on the Labor Relations Board among those on the mailing list. Some named individuals denied membership while others asserted they were not communists.

Mrs. William A. Dwinell, 21, died in a Burlington hospital after a four day pneumonia illness. Formerly Clarice Wunnenberg, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Wunnenberg of Morning Sun, she married William A. Dwinell in August while he was home on furlough. he now serves with the U.S. Wright in Honolulu, Hawaii. Funeral plans await word from him. Surviving are her husband, parents and grandparents. she was a Presbyterian church member.
Mrs Eva Anderson formerly Eva Paul of Washington died Monday at her Hutchinson Kansas home after illness. Funeral services were held yesterday in Hutchinson. Survived by husband, Nellie, Clair of Hutchinson, Hagel a teacher at Assalt College Egypt, and two married daughters Margaret and Mary. Nora Paul Ebner notified.
Arthur Martin Farnworth of Merrimac and Mia Ella Marie Tucker of Lone Rock Wis obtained a marriage license today in Wisconsin.
Texas Democrat Martin Dies chairman of the house committee investigating un American activities said he would answer Roosevelt in a radio address tonight He vowed not to mince words as Roosevelt criticized the committee publication of the Washington branch list of the American League for Peace and Democracy The address was set for 0 30 CST over the Columbia chain
Brookfield Mo October 28 state authorities appeal to airports and flyers for aid in locating a man believed to be a flying kidnapper. Carl Bivins a Brookfield flying instructor and his new yellow monoplane are missing. Suspect Ernest Pletch of Frankfort Indiana is linked by circumstantial evidence to the theft and prior escapades including kidnapping a girl in Illinois and escape from custody.

William Sentner of St Louis a communist and vice president of the CIO was fined $2500 for criminal syndicalism arising from the Newton Maytag Washing Machine strike. Judge Cooper said Iowa opposes communism and CIO activities and noted a stiffer penalty might have been possible if the incidents occurred today. The maximum penalty cited was ten years and $5000.
Dr. D. C. Barrett, director of the county health unit, reports Warren James Schnoebelen four months old son of Mr and Mrs Melvin Schnoebelen of Riverside has been taken.
Dr Barrett described a case of spinal meningitis in the contagious ward of University hospital Iowa City. The disease is less infectious than most contagious diseases, and nose and throat cultures were taken from other family members as a precaution.
The Senate approved the neutrality bill lifting the American arms embargo prompting Allied relief and German displeasure. France and Britain expect a House vote within a week to allow purchases of airplanes munitions and other military supplies for delivery to Europe.
Fire department was called yesterday evening to the Boyd home at 702 North Marion Avenue where a small fire had been put out before firefighters arrived, causing no damage.
Roy Anderson pleaded guilty to forgery and was sentenced to up to ten years in Fort Madison. He is serving a 30 day county jail term for uttering a false check and previously served time for obtaining money by false pretenses. Claude Borders pleaded guilty to operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, received three months in county jail with suspended sentence for good behavior, and was paroled to Harold Miller after a crash on highway 218. Judge Patterson adjourned the September term and scheduled the November session with Judge Siegers to start November 13. A decree divorcing Marion M. Thompson and Carrie Thompson was granted. a motion to strike in Arland Chapman vs James LeRoy McGraw was sustained, giving the plaintiff time to plead.
