Grinnell Marquis Childs a Scandinavia expert and author joins the speakers list for the eighth annual Grinnell Student Conference on International Affairs. The two day session begins this morning and runs through tomorrow.
Waterloo man L. K. Johnson aged 46, a bookkeeper for Midland Mutual Life, was sentenced to ten years in Ft. Madison penitentiary after pleading guilty to forgery. Prosecutors said the forgeries totaled about $988 of company money.
Two Floyd county farmers were injured by corn picking machines. Verne Vorhes of Marble Rock and William J Nauman of Greene were treated at Cedar Valley hospital. Vorhes suffered compound fractures when his hand was caught in the husking rollers and Nauman's hand was badly mangled in the snapping rollers.
Cedar Falls bonfires snake dance pep session and free lunch mark the Homecoming rally at Iowa State Teachers College tonight. About 2000 fans are expected on central campus south of the Commons to hear speakers and join in excitement before Saturday's football game.
Federal state and county officers raided a basement tavern near the Crystal Springs golf course and arrested operator Mark Meller after seizing a large liquor supply. Police said the tavern carried whisky with Illinois stamps, gin, wine, and a large quantity of home brew.
Services will be held for Lester Gause Jr., 28, of Lynnville at the Friends church after he died from head injuries suffered while operating a corn picker. He died at an Oskaloosa hospital and never regained consciousness. cause of the mishap remains unknown.
West Union man 21 pleaded guilty to manslaughter for a fatal truck crash that killed Lawrence Howard and Floyd in Elgin. Judge W L Eichendorf sentenced him to eight years in Fort Madison Penitentiary and a $1000 fine.
Oskaloosa dismissed charges of robbery after three Gypsies paid $60 to M. Kind wards Newton police arrested the trio. Names given include Mitchell Maritith 23 Mrs Betty Maritith 23 and Mrs Helen Wright 38. Mari tith said the other party took the money but he paid to avoid trouble.
Martha Aldridge, 65, of Des Moines is jailed in Osceola accused of swindling victims in 14 states in a chicken racket. Sheriff Roscoe Sinco and County Attorney Dio McGinnie say five weeks of investigation uncovered a scheme selling pullets via farm magazines with orders and cash taken but few chickens delivered, and complaints still arriving.
One person died when a 60 000 gallon gasoline tank at a refinery exploded. The blast threatened further explosions at nearby tanks and facilities in Atlanta authority said. The incident occurred today as responders worked to secure the site and prevent further hazard.
A fierce fire driven by strong winds swept the Cannebieres quarter of Marseille, killing at least 20 people who leaped from burning buildings or were burned. The blaze reached Hotel Noailles and the Grand Hotel, where Premier Edoard Daladier and other officials were staying during the socialist congress.
Chief Jay Brown of the Washington police department warned youths against property destruction during Halloween. Harmless observance is allowed, but excess will bring trouble. Last night some youths wrote obscene messages on South Marion avenue, and Brown said such acts can be severely punished if caught.
State Automobile Insurance marker placed at the No 2 road in Ainsworth where J W Coon was killed yesterday. The marker is placed at each highway fatality site by agent S W Kaster for the company.
St Pauls Evangelical congregation holds its annual mission festival in two services this Sunday. The morning service starts at 9 30 with the pastor preaching and the afternoon service at 2 30 features Rev Dan Bierbaum of West Burlington as guest speaker. Special mission offerings will be received. Local congregations have consistently met their denominational mission budgets.
A meeting at the courthouse resulted in a permanent Young Republican league of Washington county with Theodore B Bailey as chairman and Nellie DeWitt as secretary and treasurer. Leslie M Kicher spoke on purpose and possibilities while precinct committeemen were named for multiple wards and townships with more to follow.
The Washington board of education awarded three contracts totaling 99725 for a new grade school in the north part of town. F R B Dickinson Co of Des Moines won the general bid, Carson Plumbing & Heating won the plumbing bid, and Furlong Electric Co of Des Moines won the electrical. The project, funded by an August bond issue and a 46 percent PWA grant, replaces four ward schools. Dickinson will relocate from Cherokee Iowa to supervise the project.
Hattie McConnell became the first beneficiary of the county hospital insurance plan, paying less than a dollar for eight days of private-room care after a fall. The program covers 21 days of hospitalization and maternity services after one year of membership, with doctor and X ray fees excluded. Residents can inquire at the hospital or through local doctors.
Ralph Krantz of Washington county placed well at the state corn husking contest near Ringsted, finishing about five yards ahead of the world champion Jamson. Krantz husked 2115 pounds gross, ranking fourth in total weight, as County Agent Roudabush noted.
Charles G. Vincent 43, of Washington, died yesterday evening at Washington County Hospital after a ten day illness. He was born February 8, 1895 in Keota and lived in Washington since childhood. Survived by wife Frances Rohwer Vincent, his mother Mrs. R. G. Vincent, a sister Mrs. Robert McKee, and a brother Homer Vincent. Funeral Saturday at 2:30 at Sherman’s funeral home with Rev. William M. Nichol Jr. officiating. burial in Elm Grove cemetery. He left a decade in the hatchery business and three years in turkey farming.
Funeral services for James W. Coon 84 of Ainsworth will be held at two oclock Saturday afternoon at the Salem chapel in Highland township with Rev EF Hildabridle of Grundy Center in charge. Burial will follow in Salem cemetery. Mr Coon was killed yesterday morning when struck by an automobile in Ainsworth.
Henry Peterson, 40, of Callender, won the 1940 South Dakota state contest with a net of 2042.88 pounds. Harold Larson of Kanawha placed second. Both progress to the national contest to be held in Iowa on November 8.
Washington pastors and city churches bolster the Y M C A program with diverse roles. Ministers chair committees, supervise education and safety, and support boys work while sharing in the annual Y M C A day on November 3.
The United Presbyterian church choir directed by Carolyn Hamilton presents a special music service Sunday at 7 30 with visiting soloists from California. Mrs C H Bogle organist and Helen Hingston soprano join Margar et Christenson violinist and local musicians Helen Harvey and Mrs R H McCleery for organ piano and violin selections. The program features organ and piano pieces and a string ensemble including O Divine Redeemer by Gounod and The Swan by Saint Saens. Mr and Mrs W H Smart depart for Chicago to visit relatives this weekend.
In Tokio officials rebuke the US note to Japan as strains grow over China affairs. A Japanese bombing raid on a Lutheran mission in Honan Province killed a three year old child of Rev. and Mrs. Arthur Nyhus, and seriously injured Mrs. Nyhus and another daughter. The Nyhus family, longtime missionaries from Fertile Iowa, had endured prior captivity in China. Meanwhile Japanese forces push to control the Hankow Canton railway as Chinese troops retreat near Hankow.
The 15th district Christian Endeavor Rally takes place at the Christian church in Iowa City with speakers Dr. Jesse Bader of New York and Dr. E K Stanley Jones. Program includes talks Nearer My God To Thee and Follow the Gleam, with special music and a 5:00 pot luck supper.
