A large barn on the W. J. Keefe farm burned to the ground with a loss of four thousand bushels of oats about 40 tons of hay one horse and two calves. Two riding horses were saved. Logs valued at about 5000 dollars were partly insured as firefighters investigated the cause.
A Fort Dodge interurban line suit against truck driver William Powers ended with a jury verdict for Powers after about 19 hours of deliberation. The railroad sought damages from the crash between Powers’ truck and one of its cars, but the jury awarded no damages to the plaintiff.
A grand jury indicted Jailbreaker and charged a companion with embezzling jewelry and money from Mrs. Harold Monk. The informant alleged the man promised to obtain her husband’s release from Ft. Madison penitentiary. Oska loosa figures prominently in the case.
Tex Movnes Ralph Pratt, manager of the New Market liquor store, was suspended for days after six liquor books showing purchases of 64.5 bottles were seized during a seven week period. The books were found in a raid in Clarinda by Page county officers. The investigation started when officers raided the Dewey Woodman residence and uncovered the ledgers in a dresser drawer, each with different names.
Waterloo voters in the West Waterloo independent school district approved a 254000 bond issue to finance additions to West Waterloo High School and Lowell Elementary School. The ballot passed 634 to 266. The high school addition will convert into a junior high school.
State forester G B MacDonald told conservation students that farmers should grow a crop of oak and pine trees on poor land to earn money, pay taxes, and produce rough lumber from otherwise unproductive soil. He argued tree crops can be profitable like corn.
Carrol County officers and patrolmen pursued three men driving a black sedan with a Texas license. The trio allegedly ran a confidence game netting $800, while Farneat Buse, a farmer northeast of Glidden, reported two men approached his farm posing as horse buyers.

Sioux City authorities located Sidney Ewing 48 in the city jail after a five year dragnet for forging relief checks of a blind man George Lieh. Ewing eluded a four posse pursuit before being taken into custody by Deputy Bailiff Ward Talbot during an intoxication arrest.
Des Moines reports an gasoline explosion in a farmers home killed Clara Seiberling 24 and left neighbor Mary Conrad 21 near death. Seiberling died 5:20 am after spraying gasoline to exterminate bugs. fumes ignited by the stove. Conrad suffered burns over 60 percent and is not expected to live. The Seiberlings had moved in from Mitchellville with WPA husband Melvin and two children last Sunday.
The Associate Presbyterian congregation met at Mrs. A. J. Dawson’s home with about 45 present. A cooperative dinner preceded the business session where Walter Kleese was re-elected president, Elizabeth Dawson re-elected treasurer, and Mrs. George Masson elected secretary. A social hour followed.
Representative John J. Dempsey of New Mexico warns he will resign from the Dies committee if its probes continue as political assassination. He urges adjournment until after the election and informs Chairman Martin Dies.

Jim White the manager of Washington Lumber and Fuel Company suffered severe hand injuries when a box toppled while he inspected a shingles car. The wire wrapping on the bundle tore two fingers at the joint, but doctors hoped the fingers might be saved. He returned home with his arm in a sling as invoicing was set to begin.

Des Moines report says Mrs. Ella Seiberling, 24, and Mrs. Mary Conrad, 21, were burned near death after spraying gasoline inside the Seiberling residence to kill roaches. The fumes were ignited by a kitchen stove flame.

Berlin reports show Germany has deported between 15 000 and 20 000 Polish Jews as part of a mass expulsion. The plan was tentatively suspended amid Polish passport law talks while Poland warned of deporting a similar number of Germans. About one third of the Jews have arrived in Poland by train or forced border crossing. another third wait at borders. the rest are en route. The action followed a Polish decree threatening Poles in Germany with loss of nationality.
Walter Oetjen was taken to University hospital in Iowa City Thursday night in serious condition after a piece of steel lodged in his eye caused infection. Surgeons planned eye removal as soon as infection could be controlled with his condition monitored. Mrs Walter Oetjen and his brother were called back to Town City, with parents Rev and Mrs FF J Oetetjen of Oskaloosa also in Iowa City.
Report from Fairfield Iowa notes Hope Dare, a red haired New York show girl and friend of J Richard Davin, living quietly in town. She was seen on the streets near the home of her grandparents Mr and Mrs R O McCarty, under the name Rose Rickert.
At the state corn husking contest in Kingstead Ralph Krantz of Washington county outran world champion Carl Carlson by five reds at the finish and led by about five yards. Mr and Mrs Dave McCreedy and daughter Lois of Quincy Illinois arrive to spend Sunday with H J McCreedy.
