Cedar Rapids writer Thomas Shover Monticello reports a full grown deer crossed the highway two miles west of the city in front of his car near the Tom Yuill farm. The incident highlights rural traffic dangers in Linn County.
About 50 tons of stoker coal were removed from the Union county courthouse basement after spontaneous combustion began to smolder in the pile.
The Dresden boys choir of 66 youths from Dresden Germany, affiliated with the Great Church of the Holy Cross, Dresden, will tour America and perform on November 10 at Iowa City.
Sioux City woman A Langers files a $2,500 suit against the Sioux City Gas and Electric Co claiming a leaking main caused the death of three trees in front of her home. The trees, two maples and an elm, are described as over 280 years old.
A district court jury awarded $698 to Charles Ramsey Jr of Manning after 16 hours of deliberation in an $1800 suit against Manning Telephone Co. Ramsey claimed Howard A Ramsey, two, was injured when pulled from a wagon by low hanging telephone wires.
Arthur Poe president of the Coe college board of trustees announced three new members to fill vacancies. Rev. William C. Harlese of Ames, Presbyterian synod executive. Herbert S. Stamats and Arthur Larkow of Cedar Rapids join to succeed the late Robert Sinclair of Indianapolis and the late Rev. Harry Kremers of Cedar Rapids. former dean and the Rev. John Bren resigned.
Governor Kraschel campaigns in 1938 Iowa race referencing Herbert Hoover. He contrasts two corn types: cooperative program corn earning 67 cents and non cooperative “Hoover corn” at 30 cents, accusing Hoover of pushing cheap, low value grain.
Dan Rock was fined $25 by Municipal Judge Charles Cooter after testifying he drove more than 50 miles per hour when he struck three dogs, killing one and wounding another. A third dog fled. extent of its injuries unknown. A second charge of reckless driving carried a $50 fine, with half suspended.
Clarion Iowa report says Des Moines insurance agent F G Messerschmidt was killed when his car struck a Rock Island freight train. Conductor S F Dillon of Estherville states Messerschmidt’s auto hit the train about ten cars ahead of the caboose and wedged under the train after being dragged several hundred feet.
A campus oddity during men’s week saw a self styled court convene at the old capitol on the State University of Iowa campus. Justices emerged with bright claret lipstick after about 75 co eds were reportedly convicted and kissed as punishment. Some resisted while others complied amid playful mischief and misdirected authority.
James W. Coon age 84 was struck by a car driven by H H Bramer of Fairfield as he walked from the home of his daughter near Ainsworth. He died en route to county hospital, the third Washington county highway fatality this year. Coroner and Sheriff investigated. funeral plans pending with services likely Saturday at Salem chapel Highland township.
The Y M C A in Washington plans a major fundraising push to extend access to boys from nine years old upward. The Gray and Hi Y programs list activities from education and religion to crafts and homelife, led by Dr Dwyer and Dale Voorhees respectively. Washington will host the Eastern Iowa Hi Y assembly December 9 and 10 with Dr Stutz headlining.
Ottumwa police detained two men for a $500 confidence game targeting a Fairfield farmer. George R. Ryan of St Paul and Carl E. Ables of Kansas City were jailed in Washington County after a Fairfield arrest to keep them apart. A third man, believed to have the money, remains at large. Ernest Giese, the farmer victim, identified the pair in Fairfield.
Violet D. Ireland Palmer, wife of Michael E. Palmer of Washington, died at Oakdale hospital after two years of illness. Born in Rubio on December 2, 1909, she was educated in Rubio and Washington and trained in medical technology in Minneapolis. She married Michael E. Palmer on April 22, 1928. funeral rites are set for 10:30 a.m. at TL A Jones funeral home with burial in Woodlawn cemetery.
State highway commission advised delaying bids and a contract for the cemetery road project, blocking a joint city and county push for a fall black top or concrete route to Elm Grove Cemetery. With bids and weather delaying construction, officials fear odds favor postponement and perhaps await a federal PWA project.
