Residents of Washington are invited to hear four mayoral candidates speak at a Jaycees meeting Tuesday at 8 p.m. at the Captain's Table. The Jaycees will hold a 7 p.m. business session before the program, followed by an open discussion to close the night.
A second quake 17 hours after the first leveled much of Banja Luka, killing at least 15 and injuring hundreds. Army police and civilian teams cleared rubble as Bosnian villages suffered damage, while Bosnia Herzegovina and federal leaders pledged aid and funds.
United Press International reports a clear and cold night with lows 20 to 25. Tuesday brings mostly fair skies and a warmer trend with highs in the middle to upper 40s. Wednesday outlook shows partly cloudy skies and further warming.
The Iowa Democratic convention in Shenandoah refused to nominate a candidate to fill Vern Lisle's Senate seat unless Governor Ray postpones the election. Defense Secretary Melvin Laird announced plans to close or scale back 307 bases at home and abroad, eliminating about 37,800 military and 27,000 civilian jobs in 42 states Puerto Rico and overseas for an annual saving of 609 million dollars as part of a 3 billion economy program. Decisions for U S bases and Puerto Rico would be announced Wednesday. overseas actions await consultations with host countries.
Iowa motorists may use studded tires starting this Saturday. Public safety commissioner Jack M. Fulton noted about 7 percent of vehicles used studded tires last winter. The law allows studded tires from November 1 to April 1, 1970, with school buses and fire department emergency vehicles allowed any time.
Washington County Democrats gathered at The Willows Sunday evening with an estimated 200 attendees. Congressman Culver did not attend as he was called to Tunisia for Afro-American dialogue. his top assistant Dick Clark delivered the speech instead. Nobel Prize in Economics goes to Jan Tinbergen and Ragnar Frisch for developing dynamic models to analyze economic processes. The 72,700 dollar award, part of the Bank of Sweden’s 300th anniversary prizes, will be presented by King Gustaf VI Adolf at the Stockholm Concert Hall on December 10.
